{#MotivationMonday} @TheMoms @Ford @WarriorsinPink @KChenoweth #MoreGoodDays Luncheon @TheCarlyleHotel

Although I am not a parent I am a long time member of The Moms Network and in October 2012 they hosted an event for Breast Cancer Awareness where Martini Rossi gave $10,000 to actress/singer Kristen Chenoweth's Foundation Maddie's Corner, to be allocated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Right Action for Women. You can see my coverage of the first event HERE.

Things came full circle when they hosted the event again, this time hosted by Ford at The Carlyle Hotel in New York City, where current Cancer Warriors including this time Denise Albert, co-founder of The Moms Network, who is herself now battling Breast Cancer.

Instead of just describing events I thought I would share the video taken at the event instead:

This also saves me days of trying to edit, optimize and watermark my own photos which feels like hours of hell considering the FLU has knocked me on my butt for the past two weeks! So thank goodness for venue photographers right? You can see The MOMS coverage with more photos from the #MoreGoodDays Mamarazzi event HERE.

Here are a select few of my own photos that sum up the range of emotions:

Now I've got a ton of 'ugly cry' photos that I will spare you of, the video is enough to give you the feels, but if you really want to see those let me know and I will try to make a pinterest board for this event when my fever goes somewhere below boiling.

MY TAKE:

I think the one thing readers appreciate about me is my 'good, bad and ugly' approach to everything, when it comes to the truth you will definitely find it here!

As even handed as possible, here is my rundown and personal feelings:

GOOD: You already know my mom is a Survivor which is why I attended the first event with her, and you know what I have been going through personally when it comes to Cancer (although my cancer color would be teal not pink for what I went through which I actually didn't know until very recently). So I take the cause seriously and brands that support it. Ford has supported Warriors In Pink for 22 years now. The courageous women who shared their cancer battles/journeys were definitely an inspiration. Denise catching her Cancer early and using the media as a platform to share her story with others is also an inspiration, and I am glad she is courageously sharing her story.

BAD: Sorry but there were things I can't exactly gloss over. While the Carlyle is certainly a prestigious venue, it was a very small room for the amount of people, and when folks butts are rubbing across your back for an hour it felt a bit more confining than it did 'intimate'. I think the first venue, while also intimate, gave a bit more breathing room.

UGLY: And my last but not least sorry not sorry is that I usually feature the gift bags when I attend an event, and on the outside they were lovely but the contents were all a size small. I did reach out to the PR firm and ask to swap the items but they refused to do so. UM, color me confused, but wouldn't you want two cancer survivors wearing the clothes in their own size and talking about "More Good Days"? We were happy to send the items back to exchange them. But that was a no go. I also wish Kristen Chenoweth's new CD had been in there. The PR firm was lovely enough to tell me where I could buy all of them. (As if I didn't know. ahem. let's just leave that there.)

Besides this specific event, here are my feelings when October rolls around as a Cancer Warrior Myself:

I take on very few Editorials during October for Breast Cancer Awareness, everyone slaps something pink on their site and then think when they reach out to survivors that we are required to give them a free product placement. Warriors have bills people and we can't pay our mortgages, car note or buy food with a picture of your pink product.

Sorry Not Sorry, but the legit reporter in me has questions the moment your emails hit my inbox:

  • How much of the proceeds are being donated to the cause?
  • What do you do throughout the year, not just October?

And of course who gets labeled the "B" of Blogging"? Me! Maybe I should change my blog's name (or is that name already taken?), I was considering a re-branding anyway. Sorry darlings while I like Wool during these long, cold North East Winters, I certainly don't like Wool over my eyes.

Now back to the event, I loved hearing other survivor's share their journey, there is a vein of similarity in so many stories, humor and music is what got so many people through their battles and chemo/radiation, and I loved that this event combined both, yes there were moments with 'the feels', and 'ugly tears' (thug tears folks!) too, but being given one more good day really is a gift.

And the reminder that having a 'bad day', and having one more 'good day' really isn't the same thing, put your perceived problems into perspective and on this Motivation Monday let's take a moment to send Good Vibes to both MEN and WOMEN everywhere battling Cancer and hoping for One More Good Day.

Monday Motivation - Weekly Moment of Gratitude!

What I am grateful for:

Blogaholic Designs”=
Show Your Support-Grab A Badge!

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - NEGATIVE! -  I have never been happier to 'fail' a test! As promised, in continuation of my "Breast Cancer Awareness Month: My First Mammogram!" post, I got the results in the mail and everything is just fine! I've had the test on my mind since I took it, and when that envelope finally arrived I tore into it so fast you would have thought it was a publisher's clearing house sweepstakes envelope containing a big fat check! With all the medical stuff I have had to deal with this year it was such a relief to get good news from the lab and hospital for once! In fact I am attending a special lunch in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Survivors today, it's going to be an amazing way to start my week and totally keep me focused on the things in life that are really important. Without our health, we can't enjoy the gifts the universe is trying to send our way! Celebrate the survivors in your life by taking them out to lunch or dinner and creating a wonderful memory! In the end wonderful memories is really all we take with us! The Blogaholic Network has some awesome Breast Cancer Awareness Badges that you can use on your site with different neat designs. I loved the one above, that's actually a perfect mantra to say to yourself each and every single day even if you are not sick! Make your daily affirmation: 'Today I am NOT just Surviving, I am Thriving!"

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - YOU! - I just wanted to thank everyone again for your votes of support in conjunction with my entry for The Big Reboot. For those of you who also took the extra step of tweeting and doing facebook shares, thank you, thank you, Thank YOU! I really appreciated seeing those notes of support. I am definitely preparing for a 're-boot' for the coming new year in so many ways, winning this one would help put me on the right path to start!

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - A little me time and the word 'NO!' - I had to use the word NO to things that were not a good use of my time in order to carve out a window of absolute 'nothing' that I got to fill however I wanted to. As that's totally rare for me, I really enjoyed it! I think it put me in a better place to start my week! Just remember, people can't use you if you don't let them. Don't be afraid to say NO, and mean it!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: My First Mammogram!

I recently posted about the P&G GIVE Hope Do It For the Girls Day of Action in conjunction with the #GIVEHope Campaign, where I participated live in a celebrity hosted twitter party that was hosted by E! News Anchor, Fashion Police Co-Host, Breast Cancer Survivor and New Mom Giuliana Rancic! If you missed that post, check it out HERE! The photo above is myself and a roundtable of bloggers that were invited to participate in a special roundtable and twitter party about Breast Cancer Awareness. (Ascending Butterfly is second from the left, Center is Giuliana Rancic and far right is Allison Maxwell, a P&G employee and the youngest survivor on the panel).

Last month I had my doctor give me a referral for my first ever Mammogram. but I got super busy and never went. I had to see my primary today for a routine check up and flu shot, and he was none to happy I let my referral lapse. His office was super pro-active and got me a SAME DAY appointment to get my first ever Mammogram done at the only Hospital in Manhattan to acquire the new ImageChecker Computer Aided Detection (CAD) system for use in breast cancer screening to assist radiologists in minimizing false negative readings during mammograms.

Because of the Medical Nightmare of a year I have already been contending with, to say I was 'nervous' is probably a HUGE understatement!

But from reception to the technician everything went really smoothly. And while I'm being pitched right now by every brand under the sun who slapped 'pink' on something and want you buy it, I thought the best way to truly inspire anyone is to be open, honest and truly up front about my own experience.

Giuliana was my inspiration to follow through, she is young and she discovered a tumor during a mammogram while undergoing another round of in-vitro fertilization in an effort to get pregnant. And even though I didn't want to deal with anymore imaging this year after all the tests I have been subjected to, her story, and then meeting in her person where she shared her story and allowed us all to ask her questions, any questions, and was so open and honest, her courage pushed me to move forward and stop putting it off.

I won't have the results for a few days, but I wasn't asked to wait which I take as a good sign, and it wasn't as horrible an experience as others had led me to believe. Is it fun? No, it's a bit uncomfortable, especially if you are well-endowed like I am, think of the pressure a bit like the blood pressure cuff they place on your arm when taking your vitals, except the pressure is being applied to an area a lot more sensitve to the pressure!

My technician was very patient and really did care enough to make sure I knew what to expect and felt comfortable every step of the way.

After getting the chance to interview survivors like Giuliana Rancic, Janelle Hail, chief executive officer and founder National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., and Allison Maxwell, breast cancer survivor and P&G employee (who was actually the youngest survivor on the panel that day) they made it clear that Breast Cancer does NOT discriminate. Youth does not protect you, neither does no family history of the disease, so ladies please do your self exams monthly, make sure your primary is doing an exam even if you are, and be PRO-ACTIVE and ASK your Doctor about when you should have your first exam. While normally the first one is scheduled for women 40 and over, if there is history in your family, if you find a lump you will need to have one sooner. Your survival rate increases with early detection, so ladies, do it for 'The Girls' AND do it for YOU!

Photo/P&G, Susan Goldman

As I mentioned in my Weekly Moment of Gratitude post yesterday I recently got the chance to participate in one of my most special Twitter Parties yet. I have co-hosted and hosted many twitter parties, but this was my first time participating in a live twitter party with a Celebrity Host! As part of the P&G GIVE Hope "Do It For the Girls!" Day of Action, I attended a blogger roundtable with Giuliana Rancic, new mom, E! News anchor and breast cancer survivor, Janelle Hail, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the NationalBreast Cancer Foundation, Inc., and Allison Maxwell, breast cancer survivor and P&G employee, who openly discussed their Cancer experiences and treatments as well as the importance of a Breast Self Exam.

Giuliana Rancic, E! News anchor and breast cancer survivor, center, Janelle Hail, left, chief executive officer and founder National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., and Right, Allison Maxwell, breast cancer survivor and P&G employee

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. As well as providing a platform for breast cancer charities to raise awareness of their work and of the disease, BCAM is also a prime opportunity to remind women to be breast aware for earlier detection. Do NOT just rely on your annual doctor appointment, do your self exams MONTHLY, many survivors detected the lump themselves during their monthly self exam! And some found their lump just after meeting with their doctor who did NOT detect it.

Giuliana Rancic, E! News anchor and breast cancer survivor, center, Janelle Hail, left, chief executive officer and founder National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., and Right, Allison Maxwell, breast cancer survivor and P&G employee  Photo/P&G, Susan Goldman

One of the things that was discussed during the Q&A was just how differently everyone reacts to the news. There is no right or wrong reaction, there is no right or wrong way to deal with the news. One of the things discussed was whether it's a friend or family member, don't just ask 'What can I do?' - Just do it. Bring over food, magazines, arrange for a house-cleaning service to visit that person, arrange for an in home spa day for the person. Don't let that person just stay in the house, makes sure they get out! And don't under-estimate the power of just listening!

Giuliana Rancic, E! News anchor and breast cancer survivor, center, Janelle Hail, left, chief executive officer and founder National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., and Right, Allison Maxwell, breast cancer survivor and P&G employee

And speaking from my own experience from my Medical Nightmare this year, if a friend or family member is hospitalized, please VISIT them in person. Unfortunately the reality of most hospitals is that the person with the most visitors gets the best treatment because the staff knows someone is always watching. The person with very few visitors is often-times cared for way less. It's a very sad reality, but indeed true! (and I always say treat others the way you'd want to be treated. If it were YOU, would you be OK if your loved ones didn't bother checking on you during a hospital stay?)

After the Roundtable - The Twitter Party!

What's a Twitter Party without 'The Official #TwitterPartyDJ' right? I was tweeting great quotes and pictures from the Roundtable, here are a few pictures from my camera that I couldn't live tweet:

How YOU Can Get Involved:

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Please perform a regular breast self-exam. For more information, visit earlydetectionplan.org and click here to find out how to perform a breast self-exam.

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - You can save money while giving back by redeeming coupons in the P&G brandSAVER® found in your local newspaper. For every September 30 coupon redeemed, a 2¢ donation will be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and for every October 14 coupon redeemed, a 1¢ donation will be made.

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - A $1 donation will be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for every hand image created on the PGmyGIVE Facebook app.

MY Take:

Breast Self Exams are CRUCIAL. Please perform them monthly without fail, some people find it easy to remember to do in the shower, some prefer lying down in bed, whichever method works best for you use it! Remember, Breast Cancer does not discriminate, and being young doesn't prevent you from being afflicted, so if you have a history of breast cancer on either side of your family, discuss a game plan with your doctor about mammograms, if there is a history in your family, you are NOT too young to get a mammogram!
