I almost went to meet Jesus! My morning shower almost killed me! #WTFWednesday

My *What the Fuck* Wednesday Moment:

Ya'll your favorite butterfly almost went to meet Jesus!

I was taking a shower this morning, I heard a bursting sound and when I looked up my shower head flew off and hit the ceiling and water was spewing directly from the pipe, the water was literally *everywhere*! The shower head then hit the top of a cabinet and was bounding back toward me with full force.

As an Aries I knew to protect my head as that is where people born under the sign of Aries tend to get hurt.

Once I knew I was safe I went scrambling to put off the water. And when I inspected the shower head it looked like it had melted from the inside, I have never seen anything like it before or experienced anything like it for that matter.

Then I had to get a pot from the kitchen because these arthritic knees was not trying to sit on the floor of the bathtub and take a bath!

It was both not cute and hysterically funny at the same time!

Never a dull moment!

I opted to put on new underwear though, just in case! Special shout out to Jesus and all my Angels for keeping that shower head from hell from killing me!

Readers Sound Off: Has your shower head ever tried to kill you? Have you had a #WTF moment this week yet?

Fourth of July FIREworks now have a whole new and not so good meaning for me, this #WordlessWednesday photo is definitely worth a thousand words!

I have never truly come close to a true wordless 'Wordless Wednesday', but today will be the closest I have ever come. A bit after midnight on the Fourth of July we were awakened to the sound of someone pounding on our door yelling "FIRE!" "FIRE!".

Someone threw illegal fireworks off the roof and set the building ablaze.

I have more photos of the destruction that the FDNY left in their wake, but I think my battered bible says it all:

Bible, Battered Bible, Post Fire Bible

Unfortunately, this is the second time there was a fire in my apartment complex. This time around I am saddened by not only the things that were lost that can't be replaced, photos, the family bible pictured above, trinkets from my travels but also these things that leave me angry:

- FDNY - The firefighters were so RUDE. They let us know that we were SUPPOSED to go up to the roof and stop people from throwing illegal fireworks, um, it was late at night and I was asleep and two, I am NOT a cop. There has been quite a bit of gang activity in this area and he thinks I am supposed to risk my life confronting criminals?

- My Neighbors - People we have lent a hand to when they were locked out their apartments, held their packages when they missed Fedex/UPS - and when the worst was over everyone closed their doors, not one person asked if we would like to stay with them or needed water or anything.

- My Fair Weather Friends - Remember when it was popular to ask 'Who is your 4 am?' - meaning if anything were to happen to you and you could not call your parents, siblings etc who would that person be that would be there for you in the middle of the night. I should have already known this from my health scare in 2011 - but this, really helped hit home that I do not have a 4 am.

- My Landlord - There should be better security measures in this building and if this isn't proof of that, then I do not know what is.

Readers: Have you ever experienced a fire?

FTC Disclosure: This is NOT a sponsored post. This is a random slice of life on a New York City Subway Train where two oversized bags of balloons took over the car and all we could see was the person's feet beneath the bags!  The next day I rode the train with a pitbull (the dog, not the famous singer) and last night I rode with a chihuahua dog in our car! (Neither were service dogs by the way!) These Balloons made me think of Times Square at New Years Eve - I love Black, White and Gold Balloons for New Years Eve, don't you?

{Not So} Wordless Wednesday: New Haircut by Mark on Madison Edition! {#Photos}

Yesterday we talked about the Orgullosa Community, and that leads into my not so Wordless Wednesday today. In one of the facebook groups I belong to, one of the bloggers posted a call for New Yorkers who wanted to try out a new salon to let her know. With the year and a half I just went through, while I didn't make formal 'New Year's Resolutions', one of the things I promised myself this year is that I would not just embrace, but actually make change in my life. I know that this year won't be different if I approach it the same way, and do the same things.

I want 2013 to be a whole new year, one where I strive to balance taking more time for myself and still meeting the demands of an ever-changing constantly on the go schedule. Spending so much time last year in the hospital made my hair change a bit because of everything I went through including the crazy meds. So honestly when this opportunity opened up it was a total no brainer for me. And so I decided when I agreed to take it that I would truly let the salon go nuts and make my hair over totally.

Although true to my nature I did do my research!

About Mark on Madison:

Mark landed an apprenticeship with world-renowned hairstylist John Barrett at his Bergdoff Goodman salon (and you can best believe that the iconic salon located on the penthouse floor of Bergdoff Goodman in the heart of Manhattan must have been one amazing training ground as the women there expect no less than the best!)

Mark boasts quite a roster of celeb clientele (I won't name drop here, but you can check out his site www.markonmadison.com for a list).

Mark has worked with publications such as Sports Illustrated and Vanity Fair!

He has also worked a wide variety of high profile events including The Academy Awards, New York Fashion Week and Good Morning America!

Here is my Before:

Left: Ascending Butterfly, Right: Mark Borukhov of Mark on Madison Salon, NYC

I arrived with well below my shoulders curly hair! The first thing he told me was 'throw out your flat iron!' - As a life long wavy girl I wasn't sure at first how possible that would be for me as I normally prefer to wear my hair straight.

Here is my During:

Mark styles Ascending Butterfly at Mark on Madison Salon in New York City

Mark created long side parted fringe layers instead of bangs! He also blew out my hair in what has to be an Olympic Record Speed, and showed me how to section my hair for not only faster results, but also less breakage!

Here is my after:

Mark finalizes the style and the look is complete! Mark on Madison Salon, NYC

Voila!

My Take:

Mark took the time to understand what my real day-to-day is like and gave me his signature cut which not only frames my face, but he also took the time to teach me step by step how to maintain it, so when I left the salon I could keep the same style up at home with less effort than before. He also gave me product recommendations and helped de-bunked one of my product myths. I often avoided products that were labelled for 'curly' hair since I tend to wear my straight, but the for curly products he used on my hair worked well for me, and made me re-consider what I have been using at home.

And when I told him that I love my waves, I just hate the frizz, he gave me ideas to help achieve 'Beachy Waves' but avoid the frizz. He told after washing my hair to try gathering it like making a ponytail, then twist it clockwise and put it in a bun and sleep with it (works best for me with hair towel-dried because I have thin, fine hair that is very frizz prone) and then wake up and just rake the waves with my fingers, and then blow dry the front if I wanted it to be sleeker in the front or on top. I love that idea because it's actually workable for me since I have very little time in the morning. Thankfully I'm already using the right brushes (he recommended blow drying my hair with a boar bristle brush), which helps to make the process not only easier but also produce the desired results.

Oddly enough I went in finally ready to commit to a bigger change, and he didn't really feel I needed it. I don't have grays yet, so he didn't really feel a one process color would be a good idea for my hair type. And because I told him I do take the time out to try and wear my hair straighter, he didn't want me to take off a lot of length.

And if a great cut and styling, way faster than I even expected wasn't enough, we also went to a local coffee shop and talked 'shop' for awhile, you have to love a stylist who splits a cheesecake with you! If that's not down to earth I don't know what is!

I highly recommend Mark! And I also love that I found him on a New York City Bloggers forum, I love when bloggers share great leads! I'm not sure I would have found this salon without the recommendation, so word of mouth definitely pays off!

Wordless Wednesday: India Arie is a Butterfly Too!

In 2009 I won floor seats to a John Legend Concert followed by a meet and greet. To say I was 'excited' is probably an understatement (You can check out my original review of the concert HERE). On my way in, I met Malcolm-Jamal Warner (best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show). And if that wasn't enough he was actually only 3 rows in front of me! The opening act for that concert happened to be none other than India Arie! I already love her music, but when she came out dressed up like a butterfly I couldn't help but smile. Butterflies are my sign. They represent luck, change, someone who has passed saying hello, and always represent the universe telling me I am in the right place at the right time!

Here is my favorite concert picture of India dressed in her beautiful butterfly wings:

India.Arie in butterfly wings, John Legend Concert, Madison Square Garden, 2009

You know that The Official #TwitterPartyDJ is always thinking music, and Ascending Butterfly is always thinking butterflies, so this song by India is certainly the best of worlds, it combines my two loves, music and butterflies! Don't song lyrics read like poetry when you see them written out?

India Arie Butterfly Lyrics

Constantly creepin' caterpillar,
Still a swoon in a cocoon.
Soon you might emerge,
And you're made to emerge.
A little longing to love, lush,
Starving for affection.
Hidden by the size of my perfection,
With one exception...
If you wanna butterfly,
You gotta be a butterfly.
You know that nothing falls out of the sky.
Still a swoon in a cocoon.
If you wanna butterfly,
You gotta be a butterfly.
You know that nothing falls out of the sky.
How do I hide somebody from the great blue wide?
I'll come and sweep you up,
'Cause your time ain't up, be patient.
Now you see the sun is rising and your realizing,
Wise enough to know,
That you gotta let yourself grow.
If you wanna butterfly,
You gotta be a butterfly.
You know that nothing falls out of the sky.
Still a swoon in a cocoon.
If you wanna butterfly,
You gotta be a butterfly.
You know that nothing falls out of the sky.
What goes around comes back around;
This is nature's way.
Be conscious of what you do,
Because you will be repaid.
If you put turnips in the ground,
You will not harvest grapes.
You are what you attracted,
And this is why I say;
Uhhhhhh...
If you wanna a butterfly,
You gotta be a butterfly.
You know that nothing falls out of the sky.
Still a swoon in a cocoon.
If you wanna a butterfly,
You gotta be a butterfly.
You know that nothing falls out of the sky.
Constantly creepin' caterpillar,
Still a swoon in a cocoon.
Soon you might emerge,
And be made to emerge.
Maybe...
Still a swoon in a cocoon (repeated MANY times!)
Uhhhhhh...

India is a fantastic singer, and a BUTTERFLY too! Happy (Not So) Wordless Wednesday Butterflies!

Not So Wordless Wednesday: It's my birthday and I'll cry if I want to!

Butterflies I am finally back home from the hospital. The rest of my recuperation will take place from home instead of the hospital and I'm a few months away from being back to 'normal'. Whatever that is. Pain has been a constant companion and this is certainly NOT the birthday I envisioned for myself.

My first hospital stay that started in December of 2011 robbed me of New Years Eve and most of the month of January, and now my second stay has robbed me of the month of March, part of April and of the birthday celebration I wanted to have this year.

Yet here I am. With a different perspective on everything. I learned a lot about who I am during this difficult time. I learned a lot about what I do (and don't) want for myself and my life.

Each year for my birthday I always check out birthday horoscopes, and really thought this one was interesting:

For those of us born on April 4:

Happy Birthday! Have faith in yourself and your dreams! Your clear-thinking practical streak will get you through the whole year with ease, with some possible material gain in late May, August, and January. Don't let any little self-doubts gnaw away at your confidence. Good luck and good sense are abundant, no matter how hard you imagine things are going. Act like your normal, calm, solid self, and be ready should a big, positive shift in your work or career happen in the winter. Prepare for great things and believe in yourself. Have a marvelous year!

Just because my day didn't turn out the way I expected, thankfully the year is still young enough for me to turn around with faith, persistence, and hard work. So yeah it's my birthday and I'll cry if I want to, but then I'll get back on track and be the positive butterfly you know and love!

XOXO,

Ascending Butterfly

Not So Wordless Wednesday: Move over Dancing With the Stars, it's time for your child to shine in the Curious George Dance Contest!

If like me, you enjoyed the first episode of this season's Dancing With The Stars this week, and have been running around the house dancing since, I'm sure your child has been watching and imitating you!

As many of you remember last year I became a 'Curious George Moms' Brand Ambassador and helped host a twitter party for the Curious George Mother's Day/Dia de Las Madres episode (you can read about that HERE if you missed it the first time) and as Curious George was so special to me as a child, and I enjoyed sharing his antics with my niece and my nephews I jumped at the chance to share his latest adventure with you all.

First of all my apologies, my goal was to get this post up yesterday for you guys so I could let you know about a twitter party that happened earlier today, but I didn't come out the hospital feeling well enough so yesterday was a completely internet free day for me as per doctors orders. (I probably shouldn't be on today either, but I won't tell if you won't!)

Our friends at Curious George are back to share a new fun campaign they are working on where your child has the chance to be the star! Does your child love Curious George? Does your child love to dance? Then grab your video camera and film your child dancing to the Curious George theme song for a chance to win. And if your child is already expressing hollywood aspirations, having their dance video featured on a Curious George DVD will help put them on their way that's for sure!

My nieces and nephews are too old to participate in the contest, but I just might get them to dance to it anyway and film them! (Hey our parents have dance videos of us, we should have some of the next generation too, to blackmail them with, ahem I mean reminisce with them about when they get older!)
