{#Theatre Review} Have you made your appointment for the @SoulDoctor yet? If not, you definitely should! #Broadway

So after spending a year and a half in the hospital I wasn't totally convinced I wanted to watch anything that had 'Doctor' in the title, but some of my most magical memories have come from nights on Broadway with family and friends. It's the one thing that most lifelong New Yorkers can agree is one the best perks of living in this insane city. The city that never sleeps is always 'Go, Go, Go!' but when you go to the Theatre, the City slows down and when the lights go down you just somehow surrender and allow yourself to be transported.

While I am not Jewish, a little known Ascending Butterfly fact is that I worked for a Jewish Theological Seminary here in New York City for a Rabbi who taught me so much about the Jewish Faith, that when I learned that this was in fact based on the true story of the life and the music of Shlomo Carlebach I was very much intrigued.

About Soul Doctor:

Soul Doctor tells the fascinating story of the father of popular Jewish Music, Shlomo Carlebach, and his unlikely friendship with Nina Simone. A modern-day troubadour, Shlomo ignited the spirit of millions around the world with his soul-stirring melodies, transformative storytelling and boundless love.

After his escape from Nazi Germany, the young Rabbi befriended the legendary jazz singer Nina Simone who introduced him to soul and gospel music. With the "High Priestess of Soul" as his inspiration, Shlomo created a joyous new sound with melodies that fused his roots with American Popular Music. His meteoric rise as a "Rock Star Rabbi" as he struggled to harmonize his traditional beliefs with the "free love" generation of the 1960's features his timeless hits in a rocking score woven together by the orchestrator of The Who's Tommy and Elton John's Aida.

Cast:

Visit Soul Doctor's website for the Full Cast and Crew list HERE.

Eric Anderson stars as Shlomo, he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for his portrayal of Shlomo in the NYTW production of Soul Doctor. His Broadway credits include: Kinky Boots (which you guys know is my personal pick of my favorite Broadway Show for 2013), and South Pacific.

Amber Iman plays Nina Simone in  her SPECTACULAR Broadway Debut! (she was fantastic) Off Broadway, she has appeared in Rent, and A Civil War.

I was lucky enough to get both Eric Anderson and Amber Iman (pictured above) to sign my playbill after the performance, and she posed for a picture too and was genuine, warm and open to all the fans who approached her! Team Butterfly was being silly and goofing around saying 'Just one more baby it's the flash, yeah, it's the flash', and our cheesy Eddie Murphy impression made her crack up! I will never forget this shot, so her autograph of my playbill will make that moment and that show so much more meaningful for me!

My Take:

I enjoyed Soul Doctor, it was well-cast, and while the subject matter isn't always light-hearted, you are drawn into the performance and the journey as the character's develop. Eric delivers a strong performance as Schlomo Carlebach, and Amber Iman also delivers a strong and dynamic debut performance in her role as Nina Simone. They both had big shoes to fill that's for sure, and they both delivered, they had an ease and comfort with each other and there was so much electricity in their scenes together as well.

As a fab frugalista in a super expensive city, I'm the first to tell you that Broadway is NOT cheap, so the biggest compliment that I can give a show is that if I weren't press, would I have paid to see it and still been happy? YES. I would definitely have left just as happy if I had paid full price. I found myself truly swept up in the emotions and roller coaster ride of Shlomo's story. Good entertainment has a tendency to play on universal themes to be relevant to everyone, Shlomo's struggle to not only find his inner voice, but to buck everything he knew, as well as his parents wishes of what they felt was best for him, to find his inner voice and share that with the world is in essence every man and woman's story!

When a show can make you laugh and cry it has defintely transported you, and Soul Doctor is one appointment you WON'T want to put off!

Ascending Butterfly Monthly Book Club: #Review & #Giveaway of @RealRomaDowney Little Angels: Prayers For Every Day

Thanks for your patience while the Ascending Butterfly Monthly Book Club took a brief hiatus! We are back in action and I thought in honor of Easter coming this month, we'd offer something special for you to tuck into that Easter Basket of your favorite little one! In fact while we normally give the book of the month a full month so you all can get your entries in, we are cutting this one a little short so we can be sure that there is ample time for delivery before Easter!

Much like it is well known that children pick up languages quickly especially when exposed to them at an early age, the same holds true with giving them the fundamentals and foundation of their Faith. Our Faith is the compass that guides our actions and our lives, why not start your children early on giving them the tools they need to build a foundation of Faith that will last forever?

Faith, Prayer and Meditation are incredibly grounding, they set the pace and tone for our day, and the same holds true for little ones!

About the Author:

If that face looks familiar it should! Author Roma Downey is best known for playing the kind hearted Angel, Monica, on the Television Series 'Touched By An Angel'. A role that earned her several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. She is also the Executive Producer on the new epic mini series The Bible which aired on Sunday, March 3rd on the History Channel. She is also a spokesperson for the volunteer group Operation Smile, which provides surgeries for children around the world who were born with severe cleft lips and palates. (Operation Smile and St. Jude's Children Research Hospital are favorite causes for us here at Ascending Butterfly as well).

About the Book:

In Little Angels, four year old twins, Alex and Zoe, have eight Little Angels looking out for them. The angels live on a mural on the nursery's ceiling and come to life when the kids need them most. They act as teachers, protectors and friends - to instruct and guide. Each angel has a distinct personality. Little Angels helps to provide real practical skills such as learning ABC's and 123's in addition to teaching core family values such as the importance of being kind and of sharing, of being truthful and honest and of showing gratitude and love.

The Simple Prayer that inspired it all:

This simple, sweet prayer is what inspired the Little Angels series of books:

God in Heaven, my Savior dear Watch over my children and draw thou near Send your little angels to be at their side To light and to guard to love and to guide.

A prayer from Roma's own childhood was the inspiration for the Little Angels series! Watch Roma as she discusses all things Little Angels:

My Take:

The books are crafted with a great softly padded cover and has thick sturdy pages that are perfect for little hands to maneuver and tough enough to withstand the tortures that little ones sometimes put books through. From the sturdy yet safe construction to the super cute animation, this book (in fact the entire series) is definitely a hit! I love also that the prayers are broken down into categories like prayers for Morning, Praise, Thanks, Mealtimes, Prayers for Others, Prayers for Help, Guidance, Forgiveness, Comfort, and last but not least Bedtime. The prayers read like poems, and some pages have biblical verses which is a great starter to get little ones ready for bible study in a way that is easy for them to understand, and fun too!

Motivation Monday: What goes better with quotes than butterflies?

Graphic Reads: "When you get to the end of all the light you know and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing that one of two things shall happen: either you will be given something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly!" ~ Edward Teller

I feel like I am about to step into the unknown myself this year in so many ways, and my Faith definitely tells me I will fly! Just thought I'd put a little Motivation in your Monday, here's hoping you not just 'fly' but 'soar' this week!

What do you need encouragement to try this week? Share your leap of Faith!

Monday Motivation: Keep Calm and Believe On! #inspiration #MotivationMonday

inspirational quotes

I have been taking my own advice about carving out much needed time for myself, and I took a long weekend to re-group, de-stress, and just be. Doing so definitely helped to put me in a much better mood, and give me much needed perspective and I can now tackle a new week with energy and enthusiasm!

I hope all my butterflies out there had a wonderful weekend!

I will be closing out the yurbuds giveaway and contacting the winner shortly, and this week stay tuned for a new giveaway, and if you need a hint as to what it will be, read HERE.

Happy Monday Butterfly! What do you believe you can do this week?

Wordless Wednesday! - Ash Wednesday

As Ash Wednesday has me a bit reflective on Faith as a whole today, I thought I'd really dig into the archives and share a picture of my Baptism. I love this picture with my God Parents! Today my meditation themes will be Faith, Sacrifice and the upcoming season of Lent.

For those observing Lent, what are you giving up for Lent?

Today's Words of Inspiration - Un-answered Prayers!

Do you beleive that some of God's Greatest Gifts are un-answered prayers? If so, Why?

I do beleive in the saying. I prayed for a job in the World Trade Center that I didn't get. For a long time I couldn't understand why, I was qualified, I did well at the interview and I really liked everything about the position.

Thankfully, I didn't get the job.

Thankfully my prayer went un-answered. Or at least, not answered the way I wanted it to. What happened there shortly after, could have very easily been me.

I know many struggle with prayers un-answered, myself included, but before you pump your fists and shout at the sky, think that there may very well be a reason for delays or prayers that go seemingly 'un-answered'.

Use 'Today's Words of Inspiration' as a breathing meditation to still your mind, quiet your thoughts and bring in positive energy. As you inhale bring in only positive energy by saying in your mind, I breathe in positive energy (or you can say creative energy if that is what you wish to create more of) and as you exhale, Affirm out loud today 'I am as grateful for the prayers un-answered as I am for the ones that have been granted me!'

Spend some time each day enjoying focused breathing AND soul guided meditative visualization, in doing so, you can bring about profound and powerful changes in your life.

Visualize yourself manifesting something unique, guided by universal forces that emerge spontaneously from within your soul. Do this at least twice today and see how by taking a moment away from the hectic pace and breathing in positive energy and affirming what you wish to create, your thinking will become different.

Remember, attitude really does determine altitude.
