A win/win way to help in the #HurricaneSandy Relief Efforts via @Sakroots!

Like most of you, I get tons of  'PR Noise' in my inbox (especially at this time of year) and I rarely share emails I receive in their entirety here, but this one was too good not to share. Since 2009 I have been sharing about Brands that give back. In fact for my first year of blogging I wasn't even PR friendly, I wanted collaborations to be meaningful in ways that are bigger than the obvious, and one of the first brands to ask what if what I was asking you to cover was part of a give back initiative? That's when a light bulb clicked and I made my first brand collaboration. The same still holds true now, you have never once seen a 'what the celebs are wearing' post here. I live in New York and cover Fashion Week as an iconic part of what being a New Yorker City based Lifestyle Blogger sees, but what celebs wear, don't interest me, unless it's something they wore when they were giving back.

Ascending Butterfly has come a long way since 2009, we have collaborated with numerous brands, but a select core group are featured more often by us than others. The long term relationships I've built with some brands is because I believe in the quality and durability of the products they offer and that I respect and admire the company's principles. I love Brands that give back, especially ones that do so year round. And when a Brand I love does something that helps MY own community, I have to help them spread the word!

I tried to enlarge the graphic in the post, but it goes beyond the screen width for text so even though you can press on it to make it bigger, I wanted to share the message so it didn't get lost! The Sak Brand Group (who have collaborated with us often throughout the years for our regular feature 'Featured Monthly Handbag in the Spotlight'), is a New York and New Jersey based company, to assist in the Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts, they are donating 10% of online sales to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, where 100% of donations are dispersed to relief efforts and organizations! How cool is that? You get a fab brand new handbag that you wanted anyway AND you get to make a difference for people who really need it. Right now there are so many New Yorkers in Shelters after getting hit by BOTH Hurricane Sandy and the Nor-Easter snow storm 'Athena'!

My Take:

People think of New York City as the 'Fashion Capital of the World', and I can tell you waking up in a shelter doesn't feel so 'fashionable', but helping people in such a simple way certainly is. Please consider The Sak, sakroots and Elliot Lucca for your holiday gift giving this season. You are getting your family and friends amazing gifts they will love and that will last (let's face it accessories not only make the outfit but expand your wardrobe), but you will also be making a real difference!

Get Social With It:

Not buying right now but still want to help?

They have posted this message on their Facebook Page and Twitter Stream @Sakroots, please consider a social media share to your own networks, the more we spread the word, the more help displaced families due to Hurricane Sandy can receive.

Let's call this Give Back Friday Butterflies! I thank you in advance for spreading the word about this message!

I am on my way to #BlogHer12 so why are my thoughts on the @NicheMommy Conference?

Witchcraft, Voodoo Legends, and Vampire Folklore - OH MY!

This week the BlogHer Conference is coming back to my city, New York City! And I'm live blogging this year FOR BlogHer which I'm totally excited about. So why is my mind already on the Niche Mommy Conference?

I guess since I already live in New York City, and I'm not taking a plane to get there, I'm not getting that 'travel rush' I normally get before a conference, so my mind is drifting and wandering towards thoughts of new sites and sounds. A city I have never visited. A city with Vampire Lore (Hello, life long Horror and Vampire Movie lover here!), a city with a rich Jazz musical history and great restaurants, New Orleans!

I have been researching this city for years now, and according to the Haunted New Orleans Tours website, "New Orleans, (is) America's Most Haunted City" - It seems to me it's part haunted and part enchanted and that is a strong part of the draw for me. I don't know why none of my travels to date have yet to take me there, but I'm thinking the Niche Mommy Conference sounds like a perfect excuse, I mean ahem, a 2012 'business' trip! Yeah, that's the ticket! While I know most folks immediately think about Mardi Gras madness, I don't want to try push my way down crowded streets, I want to take leisurely strolls and get great pictures of local architecture, meet tons of locals and hit the restaurants on my wish/research list. Yes I have actually been compiling a list of must try restaurants, I'm such a hopeless foodie!

You know how I feel about Vision Boards, and how they help you put the power of attraction in action! I have been compiling info on New Orleans for awhile now, and here is an advertisement that I clipped from a  magazine that highlights some of the things I want to do while in NOLA!

My 'Big Easy' Vision Board:

Press on each picture to see them as a full page and then backspace and come back here to see the next one!

I was robbed of quite a bit of travel time in the last year (due to a medical nightmare I certainly didn't see coming), and I plan to make up for it! While there are all the obvious reasons of why I love conferences (connecting with online friends from across the miles in the real world, learning how to make my business grow stronger by blogging smarter not harder, meeting great brands and making new friends), I also love travel and I love exploring new cities. I'm totally excited that Niche Mommy will be held in New Orleans this year, and I totally hope to make it out there!

For all those coming in this week for BlogHer, please be sure to visit my post that outlines the top 10 family fun New York City sites and attractions, if you missed it, you can click HERE.

FTC Disclosure: While this is NOT a sponsored post, this is a personal essay entry into a Britax Competition for an opportunity to win a sponsorship to the Niche Mommy Conference. This is a closed competition for members of their Latina Advisory Board - Hispanic Digital Outreach Blogger Brand Ambassadors. This post is my entry, all opinions are 100% my own. I have NO personal affiliation to the Niche Mommy Conference organizers or the New Orleans Tourism Board. I am however entirely fascinated by the supernatural and have always wanted to visit New Orleans!

What do we want? Low Prices! When do we want them? NOW!

I'm probably the most weird woman on the planet, I HATE to shop. There I said it. Nothing bores me more. I hate the endless walking up and down aisles. I hate trying on clothes. If I could do all my shopping online I would.

This always drove my sisters crazy. Unlike me, if they could shop all day everyday they would. And the concept of window shopping, drives me crazy and my sisters, well they live for it.  I wasn't the teen trying to hang out at the mall. Fitting rooms plain make my hairs stand up on end.

Now when my sisters shop, I hang with my brother-in-laws. We check out electronics stores, sit on massage chairs and watch the room size televisions or play video games while we wait for everyone else to finish up their shopping so we can go eat!

Unfortunately I can't avoid shopping all together, and me being the tech nerd that I am, I figured there had to be a way to make shopping, faster, shorter, just plain easier, and thankfully there is! I personally enjoy marking decades by their commercial catch phrases (remember 'Where's The Beef?). This decade will be probably be best known for 'There's an App for that!', because usually there is! I actually found an app that takes the chore out of shopping, and I figured you'd want to know all about it too!

We are definitely living in an instant gratification society, and while I am not here to debate the pros and cons of it, I can tell you that when it comes to low prices, we can all agree we want it now! I want to know the lowest price on an item before I even step foot in the store, no one wants to waste gas driving around searching for the lowest price on something, especially when it comes to high end items like electronics. I for one am currently searching for a new laptop as I will be Live Blogging this year at the BlogHer 2012 Conference. (and I don't just mean as a blogger who will be there, I am live blogging at panels FOR BlogHer! I am super excited!) Here is the app I am using to help me take the choices I've narrowed it down to and find the best price for it:

About RedLaser:

RedLaser is a free app available for download for iPhone, Android and Windows phones. Downloaded over 20 million times, RedLaser is a secret weapon for the smart shopper – allowing you to scan or search for items to make sure you have all the information you need, including product details, ratings and price comparison.

Features:

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Scan and search for products using the bar code scanner

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Compare prices online and at local retailers, so you’ll know you’re getting the best deal

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Find out which stores stock what you’re looking for by searching for a product locally. No need to drive around town searching for what you need!

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Browse product reviews and rating

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Buy directly from your phone using PayPal mobile express checkout and you can pick up your item in a nearby store.

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Create shopping lists (or wish lists!) and easily share them with friends and family via email, SMS, Twitter and Facebook.

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Scan a food item to get allergen and ingredient information

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - To see RedLaser in action, check out this video, which shows how you can use RedLaser to find a last-minute gift.

I know know where the three specific laptops I've narrowed my choices down to are the cheapest. The app gave me just the info I need, the only thing I need to do now is decide which of the three I want! (of course if any laptop manufacturers are reading this and want to send me one, I'm totally open to it!).

RedLaser App in Action

My Take:

The app is free, easy to use, and tells you exactly where to go to find what you are looking for at the best possible price, it's instant gratification at its finest! For me it takes the chore out of shopping, and makes finding what I want at the best possible price, quick and painless. I for one read reviews on everything before making a purchase (minor or major) so I especially love that I can also browse product reviews!

Get Social:

You can get social with RedLaser on both Facebook and Twitter @RedLaserApp and don't forget to use the hashtag when you let them know just how much money you've saved, #RedLaser

My Day as a Not So Mystery Shopper in New York City!

Years ago when the 'Mystery Shopper' idea became popular and people were looking for a way to supplement their income, programs cropped up like wildfire, some reputable, others not so much. I won't say the idea didn't intrigue me, but I never had time to pursue it.

The opportunity finally presented itself, well kind of!

As many of you know, I am now a Duane Reade VIP Blogger, it all began with my entry essay blog post where I shared a bit about what Duane Reade meant to me on a personal level which you can check out HERE. When I found I got selected it made that week's Moment of Gratitude, which you can check out HERE.

Here is a Group Shot of myself and fellow fabulous Duane Reade VIP Bloggers:

Can you spot the butterfly?

Being a part of this program has given me the opportunity to take on shopping missions and share with you a bit about my purchase experience, from how I selected what I was going to buy, the path to purchase and then the products getting used at home. It's like being a mystery shopper except without all the mystery!

For me my first shopping 'mission' was all about a lazy weekend and movie night. I knew I didn't feel like cooking, and wanted my favorite snacks at hand for my Movie Night, so I checked out the online  Duane Reader Circular to find out what was on sale before heading out to the store! (Prices in this reader are available through June 2, 2012). I was excited that right on page 1, I spotted my favorite treat, Haagen Daaz (2 pints for $7 which is a super deal) and I circled that, I already knew I'd be doing a bit of cheating on my diet that day, a better choice probably would have been the Good & Delish Veggie Corn with Flaxseed Tortilla Chips and the Good & Delish Organic Salsa. I'll probably pick those up on my next trip to the store (along with the sour cream and onion Pop Chips)!  I had already stocked up on another Duane Reader sales item The Dr. Browns Soda 6 Pack, 2 for $5 (I love the Dark Cherry and Cream Soda's from Dr. Brown's). and the last thing I needed was some eats, so I picked up a DiGiorno Pizza that was also on sale. Making movie night eats and treats complete! All my movie night picks were also on sale which made me extra happy.

During my last few trips to my local store, it was being renovated, and I was happy to see that it had been completed during my recent trip, the aisles are wider and brighter, and it's so much easier to find everything which is a big time saver!

Here are some shots of me on the way to the store, it's a busy shopping district, so it's not so easy to get shots of it without someone invariably passing by and getting in the shot!

Here's me finally inside!

Below: And as soon as I walk in, I find a super friendly employee wearing a Duane Reader tee shirt in one of my favorite colors purple, she agreed to let me take a picture of her!

I wanted to look around and see the renovations so I didn't quite go straight to my aisles.

Of course I got distracted by Beauty Brands, Products and items.

Latina Bella, beauty products made with Latina Skin tones in mind, FAB!

Finally made it to the eats!

MMM.....Pizza!

Then it was on to the treats!

Ice Cream plus warm day means I'll have to run home so it doesn't melt.

Movie Night was a blast, here are my purchases in use:

Eats + Treats = Fun Movie Night!

There are more photos of this shopping experience on Ascending Butterfly's Google+ Page, and you can connect with Duane Reade online, Twitter and Facebook. (Check out the VIP Bloggers Tab on Duane Reade's Facebook Page and you'll see a picture of me! Yay!)

Happy Shopping Butterfly!

If you purchased any specials in the Duane Reader, please be sure to come back here and let us know!

Fantastic Give Back Shopping Opportunity With Naturalizer! 4 Discount Codes Available!

I love companies with a conscience, I love using my spending power to support companies that give back. During the Friends of Naturalizer event, Naturalizer will donate $1 for every shoe or handbag sold to Dress for Success®. You can help decide how they should use the donation. You can vote daily from Thursday, September 29th through Sunday, October 2nd for one of these three programs:

(1) Suiting Program:

Dress for Success’ suiting program helps solve the catch-22 that confronts disadvantaged women trying to enter the workforce: without a job, how can you afford a suit? But without a suit, how can you get a job? The suiting program is a vital first-step in a woman's journey towards self-sufficiency. When a Dress for Success client has a job interview, she receives a complete outfit that will help her feel confident in her interview. After she finds work, she can return to Dress for Success for an employment suiting, where with the help and support of a highly-trained volunteer Personal Shopper, she will receive enough apparel to mix and match for up to a week’s worth of outfits.

(2) Professional Women's Group:

Dress for Success’ Professional Women's Group (PWG) provides the network of employed Dress for Success women with a community of support, practical information and inspiration to achieve self-defined success in career and life. The group provides participants with networking opportunities and professional skills growth to promote the development of their careers. Members experience a comfortable atmosphere in which they can share, grow and network with other women who have recently made the same transition into the workforce. With more than 15,000 PWG members at 71 Dress for Success affiliates around the world, members have an infrastructure and support system wherever they live.

(3) Success Summit:

The Success Summit is an annual three-day conference for Professional Women’s Group (PWG) members and delegates to develop leadership capabilities through networking, learning new career skills and exploring topics surrounding employment trends, employment retention and advancement in the workplace. The Success Summit also provides the PWG members with the tools needed to successfully lead a Community Action Project to help make a difference in their communities. For participants, the Success Summit is a valuable resource for advancing one’s position in the workplace and in life.

I also have four 30% off discount codes that can be used online (or in store, but there wouldn't be enough time to mail them to you, so you'd have to shop online to take advantage of this offer), the first 4 butterflies to email me get it! (My email is formatted for security purposes, remove spaces and substitute the word for the dot symbol, as well as the word AT for the @ symbol - tracy (AT) ascendingbutterfly (DOT) com) - Please note these promotion codes are not valid with any other coupon code or offer, and cannot be used toward the purchase of a gift card. Have I got a 'shoportunity' for YOU

Did you know there were 3.8 million sports and recreation related concussions last year?

Are you an athlete? Do you know one? Love one? Are you raising a future or aspiring athlete? If so, there are ways you can help Dick’s Sporting Goods fund concussion testing!

Ways to help: From August 2 to September 12, Dick’s Sporting Goods will donate $1 every time you:

1) Share about the PACE campaign with your friends and Dick’s will donate a $1 to PACE - Like them on Facebook or tweet using  #DSGPACE (you should also be following them on Twitter too @DICKS)

2) Buy athletic shoes in store or online by September 12, and Dick's Sporting Goods will donate a $1 to PACE

3) Use Facebook Places or Foursquare to check in at Dick’s Sporting Goods stores

ABOUT PACE

PACE (Protecting Athletes through Concussion Education), is the nation’s largest baseline concussion screening initiative.

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Give schools nationwide access to free educational materials about concussions

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ  - Supply up to 3,335 schools with ImPACT Test Packages (each provides baseline tests for up to 300 athletes)

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Aim to screen one million young athletes

Check out Jerome Bettis getting the word out on PACE:

Dick's Sporting Goods has teamed up with ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing), the first, most-widely used and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. Eligible schools that are new to the ImPACT program will receive its software free (a $500 value) to test young athletes for one year.

ImPACT is an invaluable tool for neuropsychologists, certified athletic trainers and other licensed healthcare professionals to assist them in determining an athlete’s ability to return to play after suffering a concussion.

I personally witnessed an athlete head injury during a game back in College, and I'm thinking how helpful this would have been then!

Many of us are already shopping for athletic shoes for Back to School, why not purchase them at Dicks Sporting Goods? This way by doing something you were going to do anyway, you can help schools get much needed equipment and support young athletes! Perhaps even your own childs school could benefit by doing something so simple, shopping with a conscious. Making an active decision to have your dollars count for something! By the way if you are ordering online Dick's Sporting Goods is offering Free Shipping in a Back to School promo that includes Footwear, Backpacks and Athletic Apparel! (You're Welcome!)

Remember to use your shopping dollars wisely, and shop corporations with a conscience!

This Saturday is Small Business Saturday!

Thanks to American Express for sponsoring my writing today about small businesses.  American Express is presenting Small Business Saturday, a way to honor the local merchants who are the backbone of the economy, this Saturday, November 27.  They're offering statement credits to people who shop at small businesses, advertising for small-business owners, and donations to Girls Inc. for "Likes" of the Small Business Saturday page on Facebook.  Join the celebration by clicking the "Like" button and then visiting the Facebook page to learn more about the program and read the terms and conditions that apply.

You know just how much Ascending Butterfly loves companies who give back! I call it guilt free shopping, and it has to be the best type of shopping there is. It means knowing I spent smarter, and actually did SOMETHING with my money and my time!

First there was Black Friday, then Cyber Monday. This year, November 27th is the first ever Small Business Saturday, a day to support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country. Small Business Saturday is a national movement to drive shoppers to local merchants across the U.S.

Small Business Saturday takes place November 27, 2010. AMEX is offering $25 statement credits to people who shop at small businesses, advertising for small-business owners, and donations to Girls Inc. for "Likes" of the Small Business Saturday page on Facebook. So by shopping at a small business you are doing something smart for YOU and helping Amex doing something great for girls! How awesome is that?

I have always loved the term 'mom and pop shop' for small businesses. It always brought up images of a family working together side by side. Of businesses where you walk in, and are actually greeted by name. A place where you are certainly not another face and not just a dollar sign. A place you frequent because it feels so much like home.

I love that Amex is giving back to us for supporting small business! Communities need neighborhood stores, neighborhood stores care and should be supported. I love the fact that Amex wants to help spread the word by having us spotlight our favorite neighborhood small businesses. The ones that don't have a bottomless pocket when it comes to advertising, the businesses that are sometimes forced to stay open later and work longer hours to stay competitive.

My favorite local business is my local Beauty Parlor! For me finding a good Hairdresser is like finding a good Dentist, it's not easy, and it's something that you can't afford to do via the 'trial and error' method. You want to ensure you are putting yourself in the right hands the first time. You want to WANT to go back regularly.

And that's how I feel at United Skills, it's a Unisex Salon just north of a bustling shopping district. A district located near several well known City Landmarks, the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Gardens! With several University and College Campus' nearby.

I found them when my hairdresser of over 10 years had a heart attack and sold his salon. I was devastated for sure, this was the hairdresser who did my hair for Prom, for my graduations, I knew all his family and he knew just how I liked my hair. I could literally fall asleep on the chair and wake up and know I'd be happy. That level of trust comes over time. I didn't think I'd be able to trust another hairdresser to know how to handle my finicky hair.

I tried several places in the hunt for a new hairdresser and just wasn't happy. And when I walked into United, everyone seemed to know everyone, and here I was a total stranger walking into a very high energy salon with lots of talking, laughing, loud music, I wasn't quite sure I'd fit in. Well that was over 7 years ago, and it's the only place I'll get my hair done now! (Speaking of which, I'm over due for a haircut!).

This is a great iniative and I would definitely encourage you to make sure you frequent a small business this weekend, whether it's a local salon, or other small business in your neighborhood, make sure that you don't get so swallowed up by post Thanksgiving Chain Store Sales that you forget about the small businesses. They need your holiday dollars too!

If you are ever in the area and want to try them out:

United Skills
2445 Walton Avenue
(off Fordham Road)
Bronx NY, 10468
(718) 329-2421

If you'd like to try my hairdresser, her name is Digna!

Join the movement, spread the word!
