My experience with @LOrealParisUSA #MagicBBCream #Beauty

While I have partnered with quite a few beauty brands since the inception of Ascending Butterfly, I had yet to try a BB Cream, and when I put out the call that I was interested in trying one, I received not one, but two different brands of BB Cream, L'Oreal Paris was first to answer the call and I received their L'Oréal Paris Magic BB Cream in the shade 'Medium' to try!

It was absolutely nothing like I expected it to be, in a good way. I was under the impression they were going to be like a tinted moisturizer, and because I'm a bit hard to match when it comes to foundation, I feared the shade would end up being all wrong. Even going to 'professional beauty counters' have resulted in horrible foundation matches for me. So while most people are excited about new foundations, I tend to be to be very cautious and reserve judgement until I take a picture of myself in the sunlight and check it out. I do try holding a mirror to the window when I try out a new foundation, but I find the picture thing a better test for me.

I put a very small amount in the palm of my hand and what surprised me most of all was the texture and color, it was somehow 'grainier' than I expected it to feel and almost a grayish white hue. I will admit I was a bit hesitant at first, but while it remained white in my hand, when I applied it to my face it did blend right into my skin and what felt 'grainy' in my hand was actually the 'Beautifying Beads'. They are encapsulated pigments infused in an ultra-light lotion.

Much like it stays a grayish white in your hands, it does stay that way on your face for a small time while it blends in then sets, so don't wipe it off, it won't stay that way. While they call it a "Magic" Skin Beautifier, you have to let the magic happen first! Then you will be happy with the results!

About Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream:

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - PRIMES: to smooth skin's texture.
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - PERFECTS: to hide imperfections.
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - HYDRATES: for all day moisture.
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - CORRECTS: skin for a healthy looking even complexion.
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - ANTIOXIDANTS: Vitamins C and E
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - TRANSFORMS: To your Perfect Shade for a flawless, bare skin finish.

My Take:

As a normal-to-oily girl I love that it looks semi-matte on (not shiny at all) and is non-comedogenic and doesn't clog pores. It really does blend well and turns into the perfect match, what surprised me more is that one of our editors who is way fairer in complexion than I am, found this same exact shade to be her perfect match as well. Our skin tones and textures are by no means even similar and it worked equally well for us both. With this being my absolute first BB Cream I had no idea what to expect. I will say that I prefer to apply it with a sponge because of the gritty feeling of the texture, instead of using my fingers, but I love that I can reduce the number of steps in the morning, and just apply this and go. My only negative is that it doesn't have a sunscreen, so I still do need to add that extra step because I wear sunscreen everyday even in winter, if they add an SPF to it, it would be absolutely perfect! I do highly recommend it, and if you don't have major acne scarring on your face this really can replace a foundation especially in summer!

NYC: Sake and the City at Astor Center Event Recap {Photos} #SakeAndTheCity

Introduction to SAKE and Guided Tasting with Sake Samurai Timothy Sullivan of Urban Sake

Last week I had the opportunity to attend a very fun event at Astor Center in New York City, a SAKE tasting! I had the chance to attend not just the walk around tasting that was open only to media during the day and then opened to the public in the evening, but I also attended two seminars where I learned so much about SAKE and about creative food pairings that go beyond Sushi!

My mom introduced me to SAKE and I introduced her to Sushi, so we attended the SAKE And The City Event together and had so much fun!

Timothy Sullivan of Urban Sake gets ready to present an Introduction to SAKE and Guided Tasting

We started with the first seminar which was an Introduction to SAKE and Guided Tasting with Sake Samurai Timothy Sullivan of Urban Sake! If only I had known YEARS ago that my love of SAKE could have been turned into a job with such a fun and funky and job title!

Timothy Sullivan of Urban Sake kicks off an Introduction to SAKE and Guided Tasting

The crowd was definitely excited!

Timothy Sullivan of Urban Sake outlines Sake Ingredients during Introduction to SAKE with Guided Tasing at Astor Center in New York City

We started out by learning the ingredients that goes into SAKE, which are:

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Water
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Yeast
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Koji
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Rice

Timothy Sullivan of Urban Sake explains Sake Classifications during Introduction to SAKE with Guided Tasing at Astor Center in New York City

We then moved on to the Classifications of SAKE, they fall into either the 'Fortified Style' or the 'Pure Rice Style' this chart can be read in detail HERE.

Timothy Sullivan of Urban Sake explains the Sake Fermentation Process during Introduction to SAKE with Guided Tasing at Astor Center in New York City

He then discussed the fermentation process of Sake, which brought me back to my tour of the Bacardi Rum Factory in Puerto Rico when the tour took us through the fermentation tanks!

Everyone was excited for the tasting part of course!

Introduction to SAKE with Guided Tasing with Sake Samurai Timothy Sullivan at Astor Center in New York City

I had to snap a shot of the bar that also showed the pictures of the bottles of the SAKE we tasted!

I loved the color of the bottle, and found the Kirin-Zan SAKE to be a mild and mellow SAKE I would definitely serve!

There was time before the next seminar and we hit the walk around tasing room! I wasn't able to get pictures of every single SAKE so I tried to nab shots of the ones I really liked best from each table. The Kirin-Zan pictured above was my favorite from the first table I visited.

Aronia Nigori on the far left was this table's standout SAKE

I learned in the seminar that some SAKE is meant to be served warm and others should be served chilled. The Aronia Nigori, the pink bottle on the far left that is in the ice bucket was my next standout SAKE. This SAKE is meant to be served chilled, and there was a refreshing crispness to this one that I greatly enjoyed!

After trying the Aronia Nigori, I followed the signs to the next table!

Tahei-Zan SAKE

This SAKE is an Award Winner! And I definitely appreciated the enthusiasm in which it was presented! This was a very flexible SAKE and I can see keeping it in stock at home because it's quite balanced on the palate!

Ginkoubai Hannya Tou Plum Sake - THIS WAS OUR HANDS DOWN FAVORITE OF ALL THE SAKE WE TASTED!
We were hearing some major compliments at this point (which was about the mid-point of the tasting) regarding a Plum Sake that was a must try, in fact someone standing next to us asked us if we had tried it yet and we hadn't. He literally walked us over to this station and boy am I ever glad he did! Plum SAKE is actually already a personal favorite of mine, but this is one I had not yet tried. Hannya is this un-expected burst of Plum SAKE with a literal burst of peppery flavor, it's a bit of spice and heat that you don't expect it to have, and while you can certainly pair it with a meal, it's also one I can see you wanting to enjoy on it's own. This one was our hands down favorite, and apparently everyone else's too because when we visited Astor's Cellar later on to purchase it, it was already sold out, and I can tell you I fully understand why! This one is my super standout pick of the entire day, hands-down!

What was also fantastic is that they took so much time with us to show us a photo gallery of their brewery, and they were super personable! And if it's true that someone's passion and enthusiasm can actually be tasted in the final product be it a meal or a rice wine, then you can definitely see this is true with Hannya, they love what they do, you can truly taste it and it really shows!

After finishing up with Hannya, we realized that we lost track of time and it was time for the second seminar of the day!

The second seminar was the SAKE with Specialty Food Pairings by Brushstroke Executive Chef Isao Yamada

The second seminar was the SAKE with Specialty Food Pairings by Brushstroke Executive Chef Isao Yamada and it was fantastic! It took us beyond the obvious which is SAKE and Sushi and challenged us to be more creative with how we pair SAKE with food.

That salad was delish and so was the SAKE it was paired with!

SAKE with Specialty Food Pairings by Brushstroke Executive Chef Isao Yamada

We got to watch as the Chef prepared each dish before and then we were presented with the dish to taste!

This was definitely the most un-expected pairing, I wouldn't have thought a jerky type of meat would have paired so well with a SAKE but I was wrong!

SAKE with Specialty Food Pairings by Brushstroke Executive Chef Isao Yamada
I loved that the pairings went beyond the Sushi and SAKE mindset and challenged us to be a bit more creative and adventurous.

We got to pair the perfect Sake for the food that was prepared!

Below: I asked Timothy and Chef Yamada to pose for a close up and they kindly obliged!

LeftBrushstroke Executive Chef Isao Yamada and Right: 'Sake Samurai' Timothy Sullivan of UrbanSake.com
After the last seminar we went back to the tasting to try hit some of the stations that we missed.

My Take:

I greatly enjoyed SAKE And the City, I enjoyed trying SAKE brands that were new to me and discovering new favorites to add my list. I learned a great deal about SAKE and appreciated the panels by Timothy Sullivan and Chef Yamada greatly. Whether you are a SAKE expert or a novice this tasting definitely had a little something for everyone! I certainly hope that the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association (JSS) decide to host another one soon. Creative events are another one of the many reasons that I love my city, the 'city that never sleeps', New York City!

Butterfly, Are you a SAKE afficionado? What is your favorite SAKE?

B-READY for the Stroller Fashion Show!

Fashion Week in New York City wasn't the only place where you could see new colors and fashions on the runway! Even in baby land there were Fashion Makeovers this month, and not just one but 3 new hot colors! This year’s hottest shades — bright copper, mossy green and slate gray — will be the featured fashions on BRITAX’s line of B-READY strollers. BRITAX blended fashion forecasting with customer research to identify and showcase these three new colors in 2013 on its popular B-READY stroller.

Check them out:

Britax B-READY Stroller in newest fabric color 'Copper'

Britax B-READY Stroller in newest fabric color 'Moss'

Britax B-READY Stroller in newest fabric color 'Slate'

“Our fashion selection strategy involves more than just changing or mixing primary colors,” said Davis. “At BRITAX, we draw inspiration from fashion research, listen carefully to our customers, and then bring colors that appeal to a parent’s sense of style. Together, these three new colors complement our evolving, fashion-forward stroller line.” ~ Michelle Davis, Director of Fashion Design, BRITAX

According to Michelle Davis, Director of Fashion Design at BRITAX, the B-READY’s new slate (gray) color frequently appears in home interiors, as families move beyond basic neutrals in search of a stately shade to complement a range of colors. BRITAX selected moss because the green hue is trending upward in apparel and accessories. Copper is increasingly popular as a chic accent in jewelry and decorative metals. So now your stroller can actually blend in and integrate with your decor and lifestyle!

Besides being chic, the B-READY stroller features foam-filled rubber tires and four-point suspension to provide a smooth ride. Baby can comfortably and safely ride from age 6 months (or from birth, when used with an infant car seat) up to 55 pounds.

The top-selling single modular stroller supports growing families with its integrated CLICK & GO system. It easily converts into 14 configurations that can carry one or two children using any combination of the top seat, 2nd seat, bassinet and infant car seats (sold separately). Additionally, its reversible top seat accommodates four recline positions.

The BRITAX B-READY’s (MSRP: $499.99) sleek new fashions will be available online and in independent and major retailers this February.

My Take:

With a look that both mom and baby can wear straight off the runway, what's NOT to love? I'm evenly tied between the three colors to be honest, but was toying with changing my living room over and painting the walls gray so the timing on the new slate gray couldn't be more perfect!

Which is your favorite new color Butterfly? Sound off with a comment here, who knows, maybe we'll even see a giveaway of one of the new colors here soon!

Soup's On! + The Winter Market at Bryant Park’s Fountain Terrace! cc @DuaneReade @CollectiveBias #cbias #cbiasNY #DRAsianMeals

Perhaps it's because I was born in April, but I am a total Spring baby. There is something about the mere thought of Spring that makes me perk up! Me being ever the optimist, I was ever so hopeful when Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early Spring. And I have tried to find signs of Spring being on the way, I really have, but when your streets still look like this:

Snow very much still on the ground around here!

It's a bit hard to think Spring!

Even with this little cutie on the windowsill:

Check out that sweet little birdie on the windowsill!

It is still FREEZING out! The wind was actually so strong today it was pushing me along and I kind of felt like I was skiing along as I ran my errands today!

On my way home I decided to stop off at Duane Reade to pick up some stuff:

Duane Reade, Bronx, New York

Not sure why that happened, but these shots were actually taken at the same time back to back but one looks like it's darker than the other, I guess it's the shooting angle:

Duane Reade, Bronx, New York

This isn't my regular Duane Reade shopping location so I had to check the Aisle names to find what I was looking for, in my usual location I have all the Aisles pretty much memorized. (I could probably shop my usual location blind-folded!)

Aisle 1, Duane Reade, Bronx, New York

I am trying to change my eating habits so I bypassed those tempting bags of chips and since my fingertips still felt like ice cubes I thought I'd check out the soup aisle! And I spotted something new!

Asian Meals Malaysian Noodle Soups are sold Duane Reade!

Asian Meals currently offers 3 varieties of Noodle Soup being sold at Duane Reade, Sesame Ginger, Shitake Mushroom and Lemongrass Noodle. The Sesame Ginger was not available at this location or another one I tried, so I was only able to purchase two out of the three varieties.

Asian Meals Malaysian Shitake Noodle and Lemongrass Noodle Soups

While most soups are way better than any bag of chips, some can be very high in sodium, and while I don't have any dietary restrictions when it comes to sodium, it's still something I try to be very careful not to over consume, so I am definitely a label reader.

Asian Meals Malaysian Lemongrass Noodle Soup
What I loved about the label:

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - 0 grams trans fat
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - No MSG
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - No preservatives
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - No artificial color
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - No 3-MCPD
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Non-GMO
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - A portion of every AsianMeals purchase helps children with cancer.

Asian Meals Malaysian Shitake Noodle Noodle Soup

You know just how much I love 'give backs', when I can do something good for me and my family and also give back to others at the same time, it's a total win/win in my book!

Feeling artsy and created a cute vignette with my soups!

A soup that will warm up my heart and my tummy? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me! As you can see I decided to bring them both home! They are super easy to prepare, they can be put in the microwave, or you can just add boiling water.

Asian Meals Malaysian Shitake Noodle and Lemongrass Noodle Soups

I chose to heat mine up in the microwave, don't you just love getting home cooked, simmered all day taste in just minutes?

Asian Meals Malaysian Shitake Noodle Soup

It's B.Y.O.C, yep, bring your own chopsticks, it's that easy! I'm definitely going back to Duane Reade to try and find the the Sesame Ginger, I might add some of my own extra chicken or shrimp to that one, I added a few extra mushrooms to my Mushroom Noodle! Soups are my favorite place for leftover proteins!

My Take:

These are warm and perfect anytime for dinner, you might want throw in some extra proteins or vegetables if you have something in the fridge leftover, or add a nice crusty bread to it. They are also perfect if you brown bag your lunch to work, since you can make them even if your office doesn't have a microwave with just boiling water! I do like to keep readers fully informed, and I think it's important that you are aware that they are manufactured in a facility that uses wheat, peanut, tree nut, soy, fish and shrimp, while they do follow good manufacturing practices to segregate ingredients to help avoid cross contact with allergens, I just thought I'd be sure to point that out. They contain soy and oyster so if you or your children are allergic to either you may want to avoid these. But if you are not allergic to any of the ingredients, go for it!

EVENT:

Just wanted to be sure my New York and tri-state area readers got the heads up about The Malaysian Winter Market at Bryant Park’s Fountain Terrace! A quick way to make a difference for multi-cultural children with #Autism

The one thing many people are very surprised to find out about me is that I was a Special Education Teacher. I taught a class with students that had a very wide variety of Special Needs. Childhood Education issues and the needs of Special Ed students is something I still keep track on the pulse of despite the fact that I no longer teach.

It was an amazing learning experience for me. I learned to sign because I had students that were deaf, I taught a class that was multi-cultural and my lesson plans were conducted in both English as well as Spanish. I could reach most of my students, but sadly not all. I had one Autistic student. A student who was a challenge to reach. And the fact the student's parents both told me their child really loved my class, made me want to try harder to reach him.

I didn't have the tech resources available to me then as I do now.

I recently participated in a contest, a very important one, AT&T put out a call for entries for an 'Autism Speaks App Idea Contest' and on a whim I entered. Well I forgot all about that whim until I got an email telling me my entry made the final round, and is up for voting. It brought tears to my eyes, while I was happy I am in the running for winning, I thought about that one student I could never fully reach.

The winning App will be featured at an upcoming AT&T Hackathon, the voting ends SOON on February 17th, so if you could take one second to vote for my App idea I would greatly appreciate it. Resources to reach Autistic children are crucial, and there isn't a ton out there for bi-lingual children either, this App would be a great resource and a great learning tool for children with Autism, their families and their teachers!

VOTING INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Press here, you will go to another window
2) You will land on the Autism Speaks Facebook Page, like them if you are not doing so already
3) Press blue tab that reads 'view entries'
4) copy and paste this into search box: Bi-lingual Autism Feelings App then when the entry loads on the page
5) on the right press the blue button that reads VOTE!

THANK YOU!, THANK YOU!, THANK YOU!

Valentine's Day: Jewelry, Scent and Spa, OH MY! Edition

Left: Pictures on Gold Butterfly Pendant, Upper Right: MOR Cosmetics Blood Orange Bliss Duet, Lower Right: H2O+ Purifying Sea Salt Body Collection

Happy Valentine's Day Butterflies!

I hope you are all having a fantastic love day! I thought I'd share how I celebrated mine. As you know Butterflies factor heavily into everything for me they represent change, growth and transformation. This year is a year with many big changes and transformations ahead that are already underway. For me, there is no better gift than one that is personal, personalization can go beyond simple engraving, and when I hit upon PicturesOnGold.com Butterfly Pendant it was love at first sight. You can have a picture of your choice put in the center, or your child's thumbprint. I selected a picture of me and mama butterfly for my custom pendant, and when I saw the finished result I knew it would be my first pick as a Valentine's Day Buying Item, and I personally think it would also be fantastic for Mother's Day, Birthday's, Easter Gifts, or a special gift for a special Grad. It's pictured on the left hand side of the collage picture above.

My second Valentine's Day swoon item (on the upper right hand side of the collage picture above) is the MOR Cosmetics Blood Orange Bliss Duet, it comes packaged in a Peach colored heart coffret, the duet consists of a nurturing Shea Butter Hand Cream and Blood Orange Scented Soy Wax Petite Candle. The scent is ruby red Italian Blood Oranges infused with soft summer floral notes of Jasmine, Rose and Lily of the Valley resulting in a very fresh, delicious fragrance.

My third Valentine's Day swoon item is pictured on the lower right hand side of the collage above and it's the H2O Purifying Sea Salt Body Collection. The best way I can describe the body wash for this spa set is that you feel like you are in the inside of a champagne glass, the body wash lathers so well and it's so bubbly in a tingling and refreshing way that it feels sort of like the bubbles of a champagne glass! This set also helps to restore skin's mouisture balance and it feels super rich and indulgent. I began using H2O years ago when I discovered them in my local Bed, Bath and Beyond. In fact a lot of friends and family know I'm obsessed with their products and I get their kits often as gifts. I love their footcare sets as well.

My Take:

Valentine's Day is a day where we get to tell those we love just how much we appreciate them and vice-versa. I love personalized gifts and think that PicturesOnGold.com offerings of personal photo's on Gold or Silver Jewelry is such an amazing gift idea, and not just for Valentine's Day, but for any gift giving occasion! While Pictures on Gold was new to me, MOR and H2O+ definitely weren't as I've been using their products for a long time now. MOR products have wonderful scents and the most gorgeous packaging, and H2O+ products are also wonderfully scented and equally good for the skin, both of them feel like an indulgent spa day in the comfort of your own home!

Didn't get what you wanted this year? Our gift picks above are also a great way to say I Love You to YOU! So check them out for yourself as well as using them as gift ideas to give others.
