November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month. Diabetes is a leading cause of vision loss among Americans, and committing to getting a diabetic eye exam annually is an important step in preserving your sight. Ninety percent of severe vision loss from diabetes can be avoided by visiting your ophthalmologist annually and by controlling your diabetes. The “EyeCommitted” widget is designed to help raise awareness about diabetic eye disease and encourage Americans to commit to an annual eye exam, which can help prevent loss of vision when combined with appropriate treatment. I have also posted this widget to the bottom of this page, but I was afraid some of you might miss it so I thought I'd do a special post today and bring this important message to you all. More than 24 million people in the United States have diabetes and less than half are not getting a recommended dilated eye exam. Among the Hispanic/Latino America population, 2.5 million (9.5%) have diabetes. Furthermore, nearly half of all adult Hispanic/Latino individuals in the United States with diabetes have some type of diabetic retinopathy. These are some frightening statistics!
I have friends struggling with Diabetes and I can't stress enough how important it is to take good care of your health. Our 'Today's Words of Inspiration' often focus on the health of your 'spirit/soul' but today we wanted to shift the focus to the outer you/body.
