Ascending Butterfly has been dark most of the week, it's not because I forgot you all butterflies, I've actually been pretty busy plotting something super fun, so I need you all to save-the-date! Are you still in Turkey Day Coma? Did yesterday consist of a lot of eating, napping and television? So did mine, but I did stop to take in this year and all that I am grateful for. And each and every single one of you are definitely on my list! Considering where I was last year at this time, I realize that I didn't give myself nearly enough time to heal and rest. I took on almost every event and opportunity that came my way, to make up for lost time, to be outside as much as possible, but as this year winds down, and winter sets in, I realized yesterday that I might have over done it and pushed myself a bit too hard. I think all the Go! Go! Go! took a toll on my energy levels and spirits, but yesterday's downtime was just what the doctor ordered. And I realized my life could use a bit more downtime.

As a lifelong New Yorker I am super happy that the snowstorm we were expecting for Thanksgiving Day veered off, and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was able to take place with minimal inconveniences to the live audiences except for some high winds which made it a bit difficult to maneuver the balloons. (NO, this is NOT a Sponsored Post!) I love when the cameras pan in to zoom in on the kiddos in the crowd. The kids that still have a twinkle of magic in their eyes and in their heart, that still have a sense of wonder, it always makes me smile. It's been awhile since I've gone down there in person myself and maybe I should consider it for next year, I actually almost did this year, but it was just to prove I could get out of bed, and that didn't feel like enough reason. I spent the entire day in my PJ's, not because I was in a hospital bed and had to, but because I was in the comfort of my own home and wanted to. That was a big deal, and a lot to be grateful for.

I am honored to team up with P&G and SheSpeaks again this year for a very important cause, Breast Cancer Awareness. Last year I participated in the P&G GIVE Hope Do It For the Girls Day of Action where I participated in a blogger round-table with Breast Cancer Survivor and host of E! News Giuliana Rancic, if you missed my recap to that event click HERE. That day inspired me so much that after a visit to my primary (I changed my Primary Doctor shortly after my long term hospitalizations in 2012), where I shared my Family History with Cancer, he opted to have me begin annual Mammograms earlier than I needed to, and I shared about my very first ever Mammogram HERE.

I am so proud of P&G for being consistently involved in such an important cause that directly affects so many lives. I would say too many lives. In fact One in EVERY Eight women will get Breast Cancer in her lifetime. The death rate in fact is actually HIGHER among Latina and African American women. Every hour and a half a Latina woman dies of Breast Cancer in the United States! As a Latina I find this statistic beyond alarming and if I can help in some small way to give another woman the courage to do her self exams MONTHLY, and talk to her Primary Care Physician about getting her Mammogram than I am more than happy to do so.

This year, the P&G Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign has partnered with the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to educate everyone about the importance of early detection. Throughout the month of October you can visit the P&G Breast Cancer Awareness Website to hear P&G employees' who share inspiring stories about moments made possible in their lives due to early detection and also download the NBCF's Early Detection Plan App!

According to the National Cancer Institute, Early Detection is the BEST defense against Breast Cancer. The earlier it is detected, the higher the survival rate. When detected during the localized, (or early) stage, the five year survival rate is 98%!  An ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of cure my butterflies!

I am actually due for my annual Mammogram very soon, and want to encourage my butterflies that if you have been putting it off, please don't. Schedule your appointment as soon as possible! Breast Cancer, doesn't care how young you are, how healthy and athletic you may be, and it doesn't care that you have no history of it in your family, early detection is the key to saving lives.

My Take:

Cancer has affected my family and I know first hand how devastating it is. Early detection is key for every cancer type not just breast cancer, so please butterflies do your monthly self-exam, and if you have a history of Cancer in your family speak to your primary about referring you for a Mammogram, you do NOT have to wait until age 40 if you have a history in your family or you detect a lump! Playing it safe is the best way to ensure you'll be able to keep playing at all!

Guess who is doing a 'Twitter Takeover' of the Oprah Winfrey Network @OWNers #Twitter Account THIS Weekend? Let's Chat!

Butterflies I have a ton of NEWS for you and it's all exciting! But I have to start with what I'm doing this weekend.

THIS weekend I am doing the Holy Grail of all my Twitter Social Media Consulting to date, I am actually taking over the Oprah Winfrey Network @OWNers Twitter Account THIS weekend both on Saturday and Sunday starting at 8:30 p.m. EST! (You can certainly insert a choir of angels chorus here!) I will be tweeting from the @OWNers account, not my own, so if you are not already following @OWNers on twitter, be sure to do so! I host or co-host Twitter Parties often, and I do Social Media Consulting 'by day' so I have tweeted as a brand before, but folks this is OPRAH! It's OFFICIAL! I always knew I'd take over the twitterverse someday! As 'The Official #TwitterPartyDJ on twitter how could I not right? Well my Pinky and the Brain Plot for Twitter World Domination has begun, and I hope all my butterflies will join in the fun!

Here is the scoop: 

ON SATURDAY:

First we will be watching the action unfold on Saturday with Welcome to Sweetie Pie's where construction on West Florissant finally gets underway, but Tim and Robbie feel the heat of the re-opening deadline. Charles decides to take an acting class to pursue his dream, while Jenae struggles with letting go of TJ on his first day of daycare! You can direct your comments about this episode to me via @OWNers using the hashtag #Sweetiepies on all your tweets, if you are going to tweet about Tim, you can also add @tim_sweetiepies to your tweets as well! No spoilers here folks, we will discuss it all live as it un-folds! Mia decides to put the girls in a pageant to help build-up their character, since she herself didn't have that opportunity as a child. This will be the largest scale Twitter Takeover I've ever hosted, and it's across the span of a weekend, thankfully I never run out of things to say, and I LOVE twitter, so this is definitely a win/win for me!

You know how much Ascending Butterfly loves featuring Brands that Give Back. Brands and People that are working to make a difference in the lives of others will always have space here. In addition to October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this month The Allstate Foundation has chosen a Purple Purse as the symbol for domestic violence awareness, with the purse representing a woman's way to escape the cycle of abuse by gaining Financial Independence. The program, which is now in it's third year, has pledged to donate up to $350,000 to the YWCA for programs that are designed to assist survivors of domestic violence (and other women in need).

To get the conversation going, 1,300 purple purses filled with information on domestic violence will be distributed across the United States with the goal of the purse being passed between family, friends, community leaders, celebrities, and media. In fact there is a twitter party tonight to raise awareness and I hope that you will join. While I am not personally co-hosting this one, I will be attending to help raise awareness and discuss this important topic. (and hopefully to win too!).

For every Purple Purse passed through the end of October, The Allstate Foundation will donate $5 to the YWCA, up to $350,000 to help domestic violence survivors and to stop the cycle of abuse! They are almost there, so I am passing my Virtual Purse to each and every one of you in hopes that you will share this information with your family and friends. If you see something, say something! If you suspect someone is the victim of domestic violence, let them know you are there to help, direct them to their nearest YWCA, they need to know that there are options out there, and they don't have to accept abuse, EVER!

Butterflies, domestic violence occurs more than 145 times each HOUR in the U.S. on average, THREE women die every day as a result of injuries sustained and it affects one in four women in their lifetime - that is more women than breast, ovarian and lung cancer combined. Only about half of Americans know how to help the victims of domestic violence and the lack of financial knowledge and resources are the number one reason victims will return or stay in the abusive relationship.

Let's all get on Twitter tonight and join the #PurplePurse Movement, this is a party that we must help 'trend' on twitter, let's get everyone talking about it!

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month Butterflies! As you know my online alter ego is "The Official #TwitterPartyDJ" and in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month I am co-hosting a Twitter Party sponsored by @BigotedeLeche which is the Hispanic side of the house for the popular Got Milk? campaign! They also decided to put my limited Baking Skills to the test and challenged me to make a recipe I had never personally made before! I was assigned Pan de Bono, Columbian Cheese Bread, and as I'd rather whip up a 9 course gourmet meal from scratch but have someone else bring the baked goods and desserts, I was a bit nervous about trying my hand at this one, but it came out delish and it was actually way easier than I thought it would be! (See below the recipe for Twitter Party details).

These are the cheese bread balls before going into the oven

Here is the recipe for Columbian Cheese Bread below:

Ingredients:

2/3 cup cassava starch or yuca flour

1/4 cup precooked cornmeal or masarepa

1 cup Mexican queso freso or Colombian quesito

1 1/4 cup feta cheese

1 large egg

Directions:

Pre-heat the oven to 400°F.

In a food processor, place yuca flour, cheese & masarepa.

Process until well combined.

Add the egg slowly while food processor is running.

Divide the mixture into 12 equal size portions, shape into balls.

Place on a baking sheet.

Bake 15 to 20 minutes until golden Brown.

Here is the Golden Brown and Cheesy Delicious AFTER!

Serving Suggestion:

Be sure to serve warm. Great with Coffee or Hot Chocolate, but I also paired this with some home-made chili in lieu of biscuits! (Basket Optional!) :-)

Ingredientes:

1 taza de harina para pan de bono

4 oz de queso crema libre de grasa

1 taza de queso rallado semi descremado

1 huevo

Suficiente leche, baja en grasa, para formar una masa suave

(aproximadamente unas 2 cucharadas)

Aceite antiadherente para cocinar

Modo de Preparacion:

Precaliente el horno a 350° F.

Rocíe una charola para cocinar galletas con aceite antiadherente.

Mezcle la harina con el queso crema y añada el huevo. 

Incorpore el queso.

Divide la mezcla en 12 bolitas y ponga sobre la charola para galletas.

Hornee por 20 minutos aproximadamente, hasta que estén dorados por fuera y cocidos por dentro.

Sirva con un café con leche o un chocolate caliente.

Son perfectos para un rico desayuno.
