Did you know that tomorrow, (July 21st) is No Pet Store Puppies Day? This is a holiday whose goal is to raise awareness about the fact that most pet store puppies come from puppy mills. Tens of thousands of 'breeding dogs' spend their lives in these mills. Often times they are subjected to tiny, overcrowded cages in very unsanitary conditions, most do not receive proper vet care or even adequate food and water, with so many sadly living their entire lives without any kind of human affection. The Female dogs are bred at every opportunity giving their bodies very little time to recover between litters of puppies.
They are not leaving out kittens either, here is an informative infographic featuring interesting facts you may not know about adoptable baby kittens:
While at the BlogHer conference I got to meet this cute girl who literally everyone wanted! It was hard to pin her down to get a shot without motion/blur, but meet Dollie:
I am traveling too much right now for a pet, but when I am ready, I am definitely visiting the ASPCA and adopting a Shelter Dog and I hope you will too! (By the way the folks at Rover where also there with Dogs and you guys definitely responded positively to my doggie instagrams while at the BlogHer15 Conference so thank you!)
Do You have a Shelter Dog or Cat? If not, will you consider adopting from a shelter next time?

Great post!! I rescued a shelter cat and would do it again in a heartbeat!!! MJ L.
ReplyDeleteWe have always adopted from shelters! There are just too many animals out there that need homes to buy from a breeder!
ReplyDeleteOur dog is adopted and I would never consider getting a dog other than from a shelter. They need good homes!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post with great info for us the animal lovers. Great cause! :)
ReplyDeleteDollie is so pretty! Pitbulls are one of my favorite breeds. They get a bad wrap, but they're actually awesome family dogs.
ReplyDeleteAw...he's too cute! We're moving soon and looking at getting a shelter cat! I think anytime you can get shelter animals it's a great way to go!
ReplyDeleteThis post really resonates with me! Animal cruelty has to be stopped!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat post to raise awareness of a very sad topic. Glad that so many people adopt from shelters.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many animals just waiting for their forever home at the local shelters and I agree that this should be the first place to look.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt adopting a kitten or a puppy from a shelter is the way to go , there are so many homeless animals looking for a home and love . Thanks for a great post !!
ReplyDeleteI am all about rescuing animals. I like No Pet Store Puppies Day!
ReplyDeleteOur last two dogs were rescues and both of them had a pretty rough go of it before us. This is shining a light on a really sad problem.
ReplyDeleteMy last three dogs have been rescues. They are the best dogs I have ever owned. If you are thinking about a pet think rescue.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great post!! I have several friends who are big animal activists and I just die over their Facebook posts and want every animal they post online!! I am such a sucker for a cute doggy face!!
ReplyDeleteI adopted both of my dogs from shelters. I would never purchase them from a store.
ReplyDeleteMolly is an absolute cutie pie. We don't have any pets but I've seen enough stories about Puppy Mills to know they treat them terribly.
ReplyDeleteWe have a 9 month old puppy. Now that our family has her I'm not sure how we ever went without her! I definitely recommend adding a pet to the family! :)
ReplyDeleteA great post. We don't have a dog but we do have a cat... a cat that came from a farm and probably would not have made it through the winter... so almost a rescue, just not a shelter.
ReplyDeleteWow I had no idea. I love the kitten tips! We want a kitty so bad.
ReplyDeleteThis is an eye opener. Even kids can help and have their own set of responsibility.
ReplyDeleteI am in total support of this day! Definitely so many pets that need adoption, great reminder!
ReplyDeleteWe adopted our dog from a local organization that fosters pet--and PetSmart hosted the event. So that is a great business that we support when buying all of our pet supplies since they helped us form our family.

I did not realize the majority of pet store puppies were from puppy mills. It does make you want to find a solution doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteOur local humane society has so many great pets for adoption. We try to volunteer when we can there.
ReplyDeleteThere is no reason to buy a pet from a pet store. There are so many great pets available at the shelters to choose from.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have two shelter cats! I love that you are raising awareness for this! It definitely needs more attention.
ReplyDeleteWe adopted our first dog and she was the best decision we made. She ended up much better behaved than our other dog.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know No Pet Store Puppy day was a thing. I've had lots of pets in my life and none of them were purchased from a store!
ReplyDeleteI love this post and I hope a lot of people will read this. I will never buy a pet from a pet store, but I would easily adopt a rescue pet.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting post and I had no idea that most puppies were from puppy mills! How sad for the puppies as they always look so cute in the front window! Having said that, I have never bought a puppy from a store as there was always one in the pound who only had eyes for me! :)
ReplyDeleteOur pet dog was a gift from a family friend. He's a two year old shih tzu and is so loving and friendly. If I would consider another dog, I would choose another small dog from a shelter. Dogs are people too and they also need a home and a family.
ReplyDeleteI will definitely consider adopting a cat or a dog if given the chance. Thanks for sharing this awesome article.
ReplyDeleteWe bought our first dog from a flea market, it's been 6 wonderfukl years since we have him. Our next dog is given to us by our neighbor when he was a pup.
ReplyDeleteAre so many good pets waiting for homes at shelters so this should be the first place the people look to rather than going to pet stores. Our cat is from a shelter and she such a sweetie!
ReplyDeleteWe have 1 shelter dog we got as a pup and shelter cat we got as a kitten! I love helping and saving them from those shelters! - Jeanine
ReplyDeleteI have never received a pet from a pet store. Our local Pets Mart does have critters for sale. But their cats and dogs are only available on certain days and that is because they are brought in for special adoption days from the local shelters.
ReplyDeleteMy husband had two cats that he got from a shelter. I didn't get the chance to see them because they both died of illness before I got here.
ReplyDeleteWow this is a very informative post. I never knew puppies from pet stores are from puppy mills. I'll have to remember than when we finally break down and get the kids a puppy
ReplyDeletePuppy mills are really big in this area. The local authorities are having a tough time keeping them shut down. We have to be really careful when it comes to choosing our pets. We only go to pet stores where there are certified adoption fairs.
ReplyDeleteThe last few pets adopted us! One day they showed up and then just decided to stay.
ReplyDeleteI have 3 rescue dogs and 1 rescue cat. I would never buy from a breeder. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great read. It is important to be educated where your pet comes from.
ReplyDeleteWe actually are thinking of a pup. I would never ever buy from a mill. The pound it is!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a dog, but I do have a kitty and she came from a rescue!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. Very good information.
ReplyDeleteI remember when we were searching for a pet. We thought of the shelter, but our neighbor's cat had kittens and it worked out.
I definitely would not want a pet from a mill.
Oh my gosh, I had no idea! How sad. Thanks for informing me.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that today being a special day for pets. I have a pound puppy and she is awesome. We adopted my two other puppies from friends. They are all super spoiled.
ReplyDeletePound puppies are the best. You never know what you will find and that puppy with love you in return.
We have multiple pets from the shelter. Our newest cat had been a stray that a friend found but the no-kill shelters were full so we kept her.
ReplyDeletePuppy mills seem to be diminishing in number and that is a great thing. I bought my share of animals from them. No more.
ReplyDeleteIf we ever adopted a dog or cat we would visit an animal shelter and not a pet store. Great post.
ReplyDeleteWe got our kitten from the shelter. He's a family member now! We're so lucky to have him!
ReplyDeleteAwww! My dog is a shelter dog and we adore her. I hope a lot of people take note of his and get their own pound puppy

My family has always bought puppies and dogs from shelters. We love to rescue animals and give them a real home. It's beautiful see the animals open up and become part of the family.
ReplyDeleteI live in Puppy Mill Country. And I hate it. A huge thank you to the people that stand with me to fight them!
ReplyDeleteI only adopt pets since it is so helpful! We have had three adopted pets recently, and we love them.
