@NYBG Celebrates Lilac Weekend and Plein-Air Invitational May 4-5 and this butterfly will definitely be there! #plantlove

New York Botanical Garden Celebrates Nature’s Love Letter to Spring with Lilac Weekend and Plein-Air Invitational

With its floral clusters, sweet fragrance, and heart-shaped leaves, the lilac is nature’s love letter to spring. The Burn Family Lilac Collection at New York Botanical Garden takes the spotlight as we celebrate this American garden favorite in all of its glorious forms, colors, and aromas (both spicy and sweet!) with plein-air painting, music, guided tours, and talks.

Lilac Weekend and Plein-Air Invitational programming includes:

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Fourth Annual Plein-Air Invitational Saturday, May 4 from 11 a.m.–4 p.m., various NYBG grounds locations Every year, to help mark the Garden’s rites of spring, distinguished plein-air artists from throughout the Northeast gather across the grounds in a public display of painterly talent and nature appreciation. Led by plein-air master James Gurney, participating artists work in various media while engaging with Garden visitors. Also joining will be artists affiliated with the NYC chapter of Urban Sketchers, an international nonprofit dedicated to fostering a global community of artists who practice on-location drawing.

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Plein-Air Drop-In and Draw Saturday and Sunday, May 4 - 5, 11 a.m.–4 p.m., various NYBG grounds locations Draw inspiration from the Garden as a plein-air artist would. Drop in, grab a stool and materials and create an image of the Garden to take home. Instructors offer guided tips every half hour.

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Lilac Garden Tours with Q&A Saturday and Sunday, May 4 -5 at 11 a.m., 12, 1, 2, & 3 p.m., at the Lilac Collection Deanna Curtis, NYBG’s Curator of Woody Plants, will be on hand to share her expertise on this historic collection.

For its debut season, NY-based so&so has partnered with several organizations, including The New York Botanical Garden, to present a variety of projects such as symphony performances, opera and original ballet.

New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show 2018
Old Man Winter and that groundhog seem to want to  keep New York City in their Vice Grip of cold weather and this butterfly who is a Spring Baby (my birthday is coming up in April) yearns for signs of Spring and sunshine.

I found some amazing signs of Spring at the Media Preview of The Orchid Show at NY Botanical Gardens this week and I can't wait to share!

Daniel Ost Floral Artist New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show 2018 #OrchidNYBG
Daniel Ost, Floral Artist
The annual Orchid Show, now in its 16th year, showcases thousands of dramatically displayed Orchids in the NY Botanical Garden Enid A. Haupt Conservatory featuring a series of installations designed by one of the world's leading floral artists, Daniel Ost.  Ost uses flowers as a means of expression and his large-scale artworks were tailored to compliment the landmark Victorian Styled Conservatory and it's an explosion of texture, form and colors!

If you read my last post you know I made the switch from shooting with Canon to shooting with Nikon and that March is "Spring Into Photography" month on Ascending Butterfly to celebrate all things Photography. At this point in my journalism career I am just as much a Photographer as I am a Writer and last year's PDN Photo Plus Expo really got me fired up about upping my photography skills. This event was the inaugural run with my new Nikon and I am definitely happy I made the switch.

So to celebrate you will see tons of activity on my Instagram so be sure you are following me there. I really want to grow my Instagram a bit more this year as it was one of the last social channels I adopted. All my photos on Instagram this month will be hashtagged: #SpringIntoPhotography and #AscendingButterfly - if you would like to join us add those hashtags to your photos.

There will be fun giveaways in honor of Spring into Photography month, and this one is the first one. Whether it's a Digital Camera or your Smartphone, a good photo is about that combo of hardware and a great subject, and I can't think of a better backdrop for a fun photo challenge.

"Orchid Evenings" from 6:30 - 9:30, combines Music by DJ X-RAY, Cocktails (check out the Dancing Lady Signature Cocktail by Edible Bronx's Head Mixologist), Live Performers and the sublime beauty of the delicate orchids that are allowing visitors to make unique connections on themed 'adult only' evenings that allow for a romantic date night, or even a way for singles to connect and meet. Orchid Evenings are being held Saturdays, March 17, 24, 31, and April 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 & 21 - you are admitted based on the time on your ticket, Entry Times are at 6:30, 7:00 & 7:30 p.m.

$28 for Members and $38 per ticket for non-members, the ticket includes one complimentary beer, wine or cocktail of your choice. Head to the show before your time and hit the gift shop or dine at The Pine Tree Cafe where you can enjoy a special event menu.

If you are into the hashtag trend of taking photos and selfies in front of interesting backdrops like flower walls you are going to LOVE this exhibit, so dress up a bit!

♥ Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ This is a Sponsored Post on behalf of New York Botanical Garden. All opinions are 100% my own.

Happy Holidays Butterflies!

I attended the Media Preview Day for the New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show and was blown away with how much they improved the show this year! It literally felt like a whole new show, here is my coverage from last year's show: http://www.ascendingbutterfly.com/2016/01/last-chance-for-nybg-holiday-train-show.html

I took so many pictures that there is literally no way I can optimize and watermark them all before the holidays!

I did actually start the process, here are a few photos I've done so far:

@NYBG New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show 2017 #HTSnybg
Above: You know I like to walk you through an event in order, check out the entrance, tres festive right? You can press on the image to see it bigger and then hit back to come back to the post!

@NYBG New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show 2017 #HTSnybg, Holiday Wreath

Above: Had to do a close up on that wreath, I am actually using the RAW file of this image as my computer wallpaper right now, for the blog I use jpg format, but I always keep the RAW version of every photo I take as well.

Above: My Die Hard, true blue, long time butterflies, will know exactly why I took this shot! Look at the number on the train! Enlarge it and find the number actually appears twice.

22, 222, 2222 - these numbers always appear to me daily!

@NYBG New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show 2017 #HTSnybg, Macys Herald Square Flagship Store
Above: The iconic Macy's Herald Square Flagship Store is the first thing you see when you come up the stairs, dig how I captured that train even though it was in motion with very little blur?

@NYBG New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show 2017 #HTSnybg, Chrysler Building, Buildings reflected on water
Above: Captured another train in motion and I am loving the reflection of the buildings on the water in this shot!

There are so many more so I will get them done as time permits and post them via Pinterest, when they are ready, the word pinterest in this sentence will be clickable!

{#TastyTuesday} @MasterCard Cooking Demo with @Chef_Aaron Sanchez at @NYBG #pricelessNY #FridaNYBG #Foodie

Pro shot courtesy of @PhocialMedia (twitter) or online at www.getphocial.com

Remember last week when I shared a sneak peek from the New York Botanical Garden Media Preview Day of their latest Frida Kahlo Exhibition? If you missed that post, click HERE. What you probably didn't know is that I actually spent most of that weekend there as well, first the for kick off of 'Frida Al Fresco' Evenings where you can stroll the grounds and enjoy the exhibit after hours, and my apologies for covering the weekend out of order, but I was there again on Sunday for a MasterCard Priceless Experience, a cooking demonstration and meet and greet with Chef Aaron Sanchez!

Since this is #TastyTuesday on the interwebs I couldn't help sharing about my MasterCard Priceless Experience today.

Before you say, but Butterfly 'I am not a Blogger', MasterCard Priceless Cities is NOT just for Media, Bloggers or Digital Influencers, it is for anyone and everyone who is a Mastercard holder (which I actually am, in case anyone was asking!), the Priceless Cities experiences offer a behind-the-scenes, front of the line, private experience with tickets to the most coveted events, offered exclusively to MasterCard cardholders. These experiences are definitely located in New York City where I am based, but are also available in many other major markets, you can use the locator here to see if there are experiences in a City near you.

It's no surprise to regular readers that I am a mega foodie, and I was definitely going to jump at the chance to meet Chef Aaron! He is the chef/partner of Paloma in Stamford, CT and the restaurant Johnny Sanchez in New Orleans (another one of my fave cities!), he is also the co-star of Food Network's Chopped and the host of Cooking Channel's Taco Trip and the travel-food series MOTOCHEFS.

I got there early and caught the setup process:

OK so maybe I wanted to scope out a plan to the best seat, but it's only because I want to get you guys the best recap coverage of course!

Chef Aaron's recipe called for Jicama, don't you just love action shots?

No Chef Aaron is not hiding from the camera, it was hot outside! The cooking demo was followed by a Meet and Greet with the Chef!

One of the super cute swag stations, I spot the Chef to the right!

Above: Thankfully a very sweet PR rep also took a shot with my camera (I knew there would be pro shots but I wanted to make sure I got an extra shot just in case!) I had to hold up my signed pass!

Above: With great food and great music, I just had to nab a shot of Chef Aaron and the event's guitarist!

MY TAKE:

This is just a part of the amazing experiences I had during the opening weekend of 'Frida Al Fresco' at New York Botanical Garden, and stay tuned this week, as all this fun coverage is leading up to something special for YOU (and that special DAD in your life!)

This was actually my very first MasterCard Priceless NY experience, and it definitely won't be my last, they provided a great experience at such a wonderful venue, and if this is a taste of what their VIP experiences are like I definitely look forward to the next one!

Chef Aaron Sanchez has a new cookbook out called "Simple Food, Big Flavor - Unforgettable Mexican-Inspired Recipes from My Kitchen to Yours' (by Chef Aaron with JJ Goode) so be sure to pick it up! If you press on the image of the cookbook below it will take you straight to Amazon so you can order it online. You're Welcome!

What is your favorite Mexican Recipe? Have you already experienced a MasterCard Priceless Cities Experience, if so which one?

@NYBG Press Preview of Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life + a Gender Bending Twist I'm sure Frida would have LOVED! #FridaNYBG

Frida Kahlo, Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird circa 1940 at The New York Botanical Garden
View from the Tram of Poster that includes Frida Kahlo, Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird circa 1940. Don't you just love the two butterflies?

While Kim Kardashian West boasts that she has been taking 'selfies' since the age of four, it's the true queen of self potraits, Frida Kahlo (of her approximately 200 paintings, nearly 55 are self-portraits), that comes to life from May 16th through November 1st at The New York Botanical Garden.

The newest exhibition from The New York Botanical Garden debuts this Saturday and is the first to examine Frida Kahlo's appreciation for the beauty and variety of the natural world as evidenced by her home and garden and the complex use of plant imagery in her artwork. The exhibition features a rare display of more than a dozen original Kahlo paintings and works on paper (borrowed from Private Collections), but what truly stands out is how it re-imagines the artist's famed garden and studio at 'La Casa Azul' her lifelong home in Mexico City.

The exhibition was inspired by a trip taken by NYBG staff members to Kahlo's home in Mexico City, known as Casa Azul, it now exists as a museum dedicated to the artists life. They were inspired by the vivid indigo walls and lush plants in the courtyard.

I will walk you through the Press Preview, but I needed to point out that this six month limited exhibition will be ever-evolving throughout the course of it's run, you want to check out www.nybg.org/frida to check out what is happening from week to week so you can maximize your experience.

Upon entering the main gates at Southern Boulevard you will see a row of tall palm trees in planters and hear the sounds of traditional Mexican folk music playing through the speakers. The addition of a special cantina created just for the exhibition is where visitors can stop and purchase 'agua de jamaica', hibiscus punch, horchata, or cocktails including specialty margaritas (try the prickly pear magarita, it's delicious!)

Here is a play-by-play of the press preview:

Gregory Long, Chief Executive Officer and The William C. Steere Sr. President of The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, New York kicks off the Media Preview of Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life
Gregory Long, Chief Executive Officer and The William C. Steere Sr. President of The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, New York kicks off the Media Preview of Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life

Above: Gregory Long let us know that the exhibition is "intended to celebrate not only Kahlo's work, but also the "energy and sophistication of Mexican Culture". The exhibition was made possible by a variety of sponsors including MetLife Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Institute of Museum and Library Services, AeroMexico, Azteca, Karen Katen Foundation, Mexico Tourism, National Endowment for the Arts, Art Works, Jose Cuervo, Gillian and Robert Steel, Univision Contigo, Club Med, Modelo Especial, Mex-Am Cultural Foundation, Prestige Paints, and the Federal Council on the Arts and Humanities.

The Enid Haupt Conservatory should be your first stop, it is where Kahlo's re-imagined studio at La Casa Azul (the Blue House) is on display. During the quick walk there you can enjoy the poetry of Octavio Paz, as part of the Poetry for Every Season: Octavio Paz Poetry Walk. (His poems often referenced many native plants and flowers) but it is the exhibition wing at the Conservatory that comes alive with an explosion of native fauna of Mexio found at Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's Casa Azul including typical pottery and planters.

Above: Remember the 'Gender Bender Twist' that I alluded to in my title? Well here it is! Two male models brought the art to life by posing with Humberto's dresses. I think Frida Kahlo who was speculated to be bi-sexual, and often dressed in 'drag' as a male, even posing in family portraits as a man would have gotten a big kick out of this! And the models who remained very much 'in character' were incredibly compelling and brought an interesting dimension to the presentation of Humberto Spindola's work. NYBG staff members that had actually visited the 'real' Casa Azul in Mexico City met Humberto who was working there as a Gardener. (We were actually seated near each other during lunch and I had to work very hard to resist my urge to geek out and ask a ton of questions!)

It was an absolutely perfect moment, the weather was beautiful, not too hot or cold out, great company, great food, an amazing exhibition and eating outdoors with the beauty of the Garden surroundings.

Hecho en Mexico sign at The New York Botanical Garden #FridaNYBG

Much like the Orchid Show, the exhibition will also include an evenings version on Select Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. called 'Frida Al Fresco' allowing you to stroll the exhibition after hours that will include live music performances, an outdoor Cantina where you can enjoy a Modelo Especial Draft (cerveza) or a Jose Cuervo Margarita, and Mexican foodie fare inspired by Kahlo's own recipes called "Frida's Kitchen" a prix fixe menu in the brand new full-service restaurant the Hudson Garden Grill, I greatly enjoyed Orchid Evenings, and can't wait to experience 'Frida Al Fresco' this weekend! Your advanced ticket purchase for Frida Al Fresco includes one complimentary Modelo Especial Draft or a Jose Cuervo Tradicional Margarita, your choice (and of course non-alcholic beverages are available too if you prefer!).

That's me getting in touch with Nature!

My Take:

Frida Kahlo in many ways was ahead of her time, and I feel this exhibition is very much a living, breathing, ever-evolving tribute to the artist and the woman, It is interactive, immersive, creative, and vastly different from any presentation I have experienced of her work. I actually have way more pictures and could go on a lot longer, so I will be covering the show again throughout it's run and hopefully showing you how vastly different the experience is from visit to visit. Mexico is actually one of my favorite Travel Destinations, and The New York Botanical Garden has managed to bring a piece of the cultural richness of Mexico right to Bronx, New York!

Garden Members can enjoy a preview of the show on Friday, May 15th, and the show opens to the public on Saturday, May 16th. Benefits on the Members-Only Preview Day include Free Parking with a valid Member ID, 20% discount on all purchases at Shop in the Garden, 10% discount at the Cafe, and up to four half price tickets for friends and family.

I will also be working on a Pinterest Board that will include pictures that didn't make this post and will also include photos from all the days I visit this exhibit, I will post the link to the URL as soon as it's up.

Get Social:

Tag your tweets and instagrams with #FridaNYBG

Get Smart:

Take the Mobile Tour via smartphone, the mobile app serves much like a digital brochure and map of the exhibition on your phone, and has some fun extras including taking a Frida Selfie! Content on the app is in both English and Spanish as are the Poems in the Poetry Walk! There are also screenings

I can't begin to express just how much I enjoyed the Media Preview and I look forward to opening weekend! I have a strong feeling I will be back quite a bit during the course of this exhibition, this Latina Lifestyle Blogger was in paradise!

Do you have a favorite Frida Kahlo Painting? If so, which one? Butterflies I know just how much you appreciated the Orchid Evenings Giveaway and I will work on getting one put together for this show as well so please stay tuned!
