Very slowly here in New York City I'm sensing signs of Spring, the little birds chirping outside the window, and families preparing for Easter. Like most, I wish Punxsutawney Phil has been a bit more accurate about Spring coming early, as we are actually expecting more snow this week which I am NOT looking forward to!

Since my birthday is in early April, I thought I'd host a fun giveaway countdown to my birthday called 'It's MY birthday but YOU get the gifts', and to get ourselves in a festive mood, why not start with a beauty giveaway?

My Take:

I love that I can create a wide variety of looks with Jane's products, I can go from day to night with ease all the while knowing I am doing something GOOD for my skin! If you take a moment to read the product testimonials on their site, you'll see good reviews and reviews from users who weren't 100% satisfied, but the difference is, when Jane Iredale Cosmetics gets a less than glowing review, they really want to know WHY the product didn't work, and they actually go back to the lab and find ways to make their products better! Can we satisfy 100% of the people 100% of the time, of course not, but it's nice to see a brand take user feedback so seriously that they keep re-formulating, and bringing new innovations to products that are already best-selling favorites. What's new in #lashesandlips from @janeiredale #Cosmetics Spring #Beauty

Last week I had the opportunity to attend an evening of Fresh Delights and Mixology at Haven's Kitchen in New York City with the Jane Iredale Cosmetics team and learn about the latest releases for Spring in their iconic skincare line.

Even those that haven't met me in person, know from my posts here, that I custom blend two things, there are two things I have never worn straight out of it's container as is: (1) My Lip Color and (2) My Scent. I prefer to blend them until the result is something totally and uniquely me. So I have to admit I'm always a bit skeptical and picky when it comes to lip color and fragrances, and not everything I get to try makes our pages.

When your first experience with a brand is an entirely transformative one, it definitely stays in your mind and you always want to know what's new and what's going on with the line. At the 2010 New York Makeup Show I got the chance to try out a makover from Jane Iredale's team, for some reason they were the only table I said yes to that day. And while the artist there did appreciate the work that went into my custom blend signature red lip, he wiped the slate clean so to speak and did the entire opposite of what I'm used to in makeup. He gave me a heavier eye and a barely more than nude lip. I honestly didn't recognize myself at first when he was done, but I really did like it. and I kept buying the products he used on me that day, until the gloss which I love, love, love, stopped being made. OH THE HORROR! (I even use that gloss in my signature custom blend red lip!)

It's actually a huge fear of mine that started many years ago with a drugstore brand of red and plum that I fell in love with and a few years later when it stopped being produced and I was back at square one, I was NOT a happy camper! Thankfully my fears were assuaged at Jane Iredale's introduction of PureGloss, this luxurious new formula is creamy on the lips, does NOT use petroleum-based products, and does not feel tacky. (No worries about your hair sticking to your lips on windy days!)

I have been playing with the colors already and creating my own custom colors and blends with them, but one of our editors who is way better than I am at playing by the rules, has already worn Beach Plum straight out the tube with only her lip liner, and she loved the color on it's own, she wanted me to let you all know it gave great saturation on it's own, a sheer hint of tint and a light hint of fruit is how she described it!

I'm playing with Red Currant, Snowberry, Cosmo, Tangerine, and my editor nabbed Beach Plum! While these glosses are totally seasonless, they are just the pop of Spring I needed to put winter far behind me!

Longest Lash Lengthening and Thickening Mascara

I think the new squeeze tube design is absolutely brilliant, and wish I would have thought of it first! It helps you to dispense an even amount all around the applicator so you don't have to double pump for mascara which helps you eliminate clumps and get out every last bit of product! The formulation is water resistant and lengthens your lashes with the help of plant cellulose fibers, NOT synthetic ones!

PureLash Lash Extender and Conditioner

I have been using the Lash Extender and Conditioner since being introduced to it in 2010, but I read a very helpful hint on the Jane Iredale Makeup Blog that I thought I would pass along here, if you plan to layer both products, don't let the Conditioner fully dry before applying the Longest Lash!

Mixology, The Event:

They chose a warm, lovely, intimate event venue called Haven's Kitchen in Manhattan to debut the new collection of PureGloss and the new formulation and packaging of their Mascara to Bloggers and Makeup Artists, with signature drinks to match the new PureGloss Shades! Here is a mix of pro shots and my shots taken during the event!

We learned how to make these super delish cocktails that share the same names as the new PureGloss shades from Jane Iredale!

Snowberry Cocktail with it's matching PureGloss Lip Gloss in front of it,  Red Currant Cocktail with it's matching PureGloss Lipgloss in front of it and last but not least, Beach Plum Cocktail with it's matching PureGloss Lip Gloss in front of it, and a a signature sprig of Lavendar. Jane Iredale grows it in her garden, and her cosmetics come wrapped in her signature tissue paper with a sprig of lavendar on top! Very lovely touch! Great job Haven's Kitchen, they truly customized the cocktails to the colors and to the person behind the brand, genius! It's a detail that did not go un-noticed!

My Take:

The Jane Iredale team put together a wonderful time where bloggers got the chance to try out and find their perfect shade match, and learn how to make the Signature Cocktails when the mixologists gave some of us the chance to get behind the bar and try our hand at making the cocktails. We got a great selection of the new collections to take home and try out and I am sure I speak for everyone when I say I can't wait for Spring to begin here in the city! The new PureGloss formulations have great pigmentation and consistency, and the new  Longest Lash Lengthening and Thickening Mascara has such a fantastic new squeeze tube that really helps to apply it better and smarter!

Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup is dubbed 'THE SKIN CARE MAKEUP' for very good reason. They firmly believe in an all-around approach to skincare and beauty. I recently attended a very special Lucky Magazine luncheon with Jane Iredale (which I recapped originally HERE), where she shared her personal as well as professional influences and gave us no holds barred access and carte blanche to ask her anything! How many times does that chance arise? I left feeling totally inspired. I left the luncheon even more determined than ever to pursue my passions. Will there be people who tell you are crazy for following your bliss? Maybe. Should you let that stop you? NEVER!

Jane turned her trials into triumphs, and let her obstacles along the way become lessons learned on how to hone her drive and her ambitions and I absolutely love that! For me, the chance to know the actual 'heart' behind the brand makes using the products that much more meaningful for me.

In 2010 I had my first encounter with the brand at the New York Makeup Show. After a ton of saying No that day because of time constraints, I stopped and let one of the artists make me over. When tons of people stopped to watch and then wanted to be made over too, I knew he was doing a great job, but he didn't let me see until my face was completely done, and when I was able to finally look at the finished job, I was blown away, I felt totally transformed. And not necessarily just the makeup, I felt personally transformed, and after that looked at myself in a whole new light.

It's super easy to get so busy that you neglect yourself. And that doesn't just apply to moms, every single women out there makes daily sacrifices because simply put we all know there isn't enough time in a day to make it all happen. Slowly, my makeup and hair had become the areas I would scrimp on to save time. I'd do my signature red lip that I blend myself, but skip the foundation, mascara, eye shadow and put my hair into a ponytail most days.

Besides having events to attend, I reached a point where I wanted a different look, after a year that has been extremely challenging to say the least, I needed a 'life lift'. And I've started giving myself one. Taking more time on and for myself.

Small changes here and there start to add up. And start to change your outlook. A bit of primping and pampering go beyond 'vanity' ladies, it reminds you exactly of what you deserve in life. And when you take that time, it certainly changes the perception of others and they treat you differently. But you have to treat yourself differently first!

As for me, my early years in graphic design and marketing has also given me an eye that tends scrutinize the packaging of what I buy. I love unique packaging! So when I opened up my gift bag from the Jane Iredale Luncheon, and opened the Triple Pearl Powder Finishing Powder, I immediately noticed the packaging, not just the outer, which was pretty too, but the actual compact inside, which is adorned with a real shell! And the applicator brush is super soft too. It honestly just looks and feels like a treat. Each shell is unique because that is how nature makes them. Last month in the midst of holiday madness, a whirlwind of personal and professional events, (including Spring and Summer 2013 Previews how bizarre is that right?), came a gem of an event that left me truly inspired and uplifted afterwards, a bloggers Luncheon with Jane Iredale hosted by Lucky Magazine.

My first introduction to the brand was during the Makeup Show in NYC in 2010. When I got to the Jane Iredale booth I met Kevin Mendleson who is now the Global Educator for the Jane Iredale Cosmetics Brand. He gave me what I considered then and still consider to this day a total transformation. His makeover truly transformed the way I saw myself.  And that of course started my fascination with the brand. Kevin actually really took the time to understand my lifestyle, my rush out the door barely time for anything mornings, down to my eating habits and diet! I was pleasantly surprised, he gave me a ton of advice, and decided on giving me an all out glam girl look and he *gasp* introduced me to the muted/aka 'Nude' lip! (and I was delighted that he did appreciate the work that goes into my signature custom daily red lip). He made me let go of my comfort zone and help to see myself in a new way.

And that inner/outer combination is what exactly Jane Iredale is all about!

Before the event began we were given the chance to write out a question we wanted to ask Jane! Which I thought was fantastic, nothing scripted, and everything straight from the heart and on the spot!

Our Moderator and all-around 'hostess with the mostest!' was none other than Lucky Magazine Beauty Director, Jean Godfrey-June (can I be her when I grow up?), and many of us curious bloggers also wanted to know Jean's answers to many of the questions that were also asked of Jane.

"I asked myself, why can't we have a makeup that's GOOD for the skin?" ~ Jane Iredale

Much like me Jane is NOT yet a mom, but dotes over her 'furbabies'. She said "Having two dogs helps, they have to be walked, they have to be taken care of - that at least gets me out of the office! One of my absolute favorite quotes from the luncheon was:

"To be a successful entrepreneur, you have to have passion for what you are doing then that passion is all consuming" ~ Jane Iredale

 

We learned that the company came about after a broadway show that had flopped in a week left Jane searching for what was next. I personally think being at a standstill be it personally or professionally is where our best ideas come from, and hearing someone that has reached such an amazing level of success say the same just added fuel to my flame to stick with my passions, allow myself to sometimes go down the rabbit hole and see where it leads!  When Jane said "The Public Failure, it was just ugly, but I learned that I didn't know enough about it to take on writing a Broadway show, but it was good. If that hadn't happened I wouldn't have started my company", I think it was an 'a-ha' moment for everyone. I doubt there is anyone out there who can't relate to personal or professional mis-steps of their own. But it's what she did with that 'failure' that led to her ultimate triumph and victory.

What does Jane do in her 'spare time'? - "I love to read. I love Gardening, it resonates to everything I do" She also likes to play Golf and hang out with her Dogs!

When asked - What do you have in mind when you design? she replied "Things I have personal interest in, and things consumers would like. We have two seasonal collections that are really, really about color."

When asked - Do you have advice regarding criticism of your work? I really loved her response:

"It's hard to deal with, but you can't ignore it. The worst thing you can do is pretend it didn't happen. you have to face it. And have some objectivity. Confront it, deal with it, it's an opportunity to learn." ~ Jane Iredale
