{#MondayMotivation} What happens when @Kmart gives select NYC #Bloggers an unlimited budget to shop for @StJude? #Kmart #Love

For those of you that follow me via Social Media, I recently experienced another death in my family. Second one this year if you are keeping count.

It sent me into a very dark tailspin.

One I'm truthfully still trying to shake.

And while I have turned down a majority of events I have been invited to this last quarter of the year, one event invite stood out from the rest.

The opportunity to join with fellow NYC bloggers to support an initiative with Kmart to help St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Philanthropist Marlo Thomas (daughter of Danny Thomas who founded the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee in 1962) was there with some of the children of St. Jude to lead us in a Toy-Shopping Spree - with my favorite words ever included - 'unlimited budget'. We were told only to 'fill up our carts' and that we were shopping from ages 0-18.

Kmart has marked a milestone achievement of donating $100 Million to St. Jude in total lifetime donations. They are the first Corporate Partner in the hospital's history to attain this landmark donation!
These funds have helped to:

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Fully treat 206 patients with ALL, the most common form of childhood cancer

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Provide more than 10 million meals for St. Jude Families

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Cover the costs of 67,000 days of Chemotherapy

Here are some photo highlights to put a smile in your motivation Monday!

See those cute #Love Hats? They are available at Kmart for $5 and $1 from each hat goes directly to St. Jude!

Special thanks to NYC Blogger and St. Jude Blogger Brand Ambassador, Nichol Perez of fivelittlewords.net for sharing the three photos above with me!

I filled my cart with stuff for pretty much every age group!
MY TAKE:

This is an amazing achievement, and I personally prefer to support brands that are doing something to give back. Way to go Kmart!

I haven't even put up a tree yet with everything I am dealing with (and quite frankly may not), but as a survivor I jumped on the chance to help do something to bring a smile to the children of St. Jude, I know how much a prolonged hospital stay sucks, I know how much Cancer Sucks, anything that makes Christmas a bit brighter for children battling cancer and are in the hospital for Christmas is something I am all about doing.

And I got to experience the joy of giving at a moment where I really needed it most. They have no idea how much I needed to be there and do something to get outside of my own head for a little while.

As I am not a mom it gets super frustrating to be pitched toys all the time, EXCEPT in THIS context!

An event where the toy swag goes directly to the children who need it? YES, PLEASE!

Readers Sound Off: Does knowing that Kmart has reached this milestone level of support for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital make you want to shop there just a bit more? Will you pick up a #Love hat this holiday season?

The five funniest @elfontheshelf Photos across the interwebs + why the elf now sticks around past the holidays!

Elf on the Shelf A Birthday Tradition
Elf on the Shelf A Birthday Tradition

Earlier this year I got to attend the Niche Parent Network's New York City Meetup at Dylan's Candy Bar hosted by Elf on the Shelf. I got to attend the Niche Parent Conference in it's inaugural year in 2012 (when it was branded as Niche Mommy, here is my recap of that conference in case you missed it: http://www.ascendingbutterfly.com/2012/08/weekly-moment-of-gratitude-new-orleans.html) and this year different cities held pre-conference meetups before this year's conference. Since I wasn't able to attend the conference this year, I am glad I had the opportunity to attend the NYC meetup.

As I am not a mom and do not have children, I learned quite a bit about Elf on the Shelf as I was not familiar with the tradition or the company's backstory. Lisa of the blog Atypical Familia is a niche parent ambassador and she coordinated the NYC meetup. In attendance at the meetup was Christa Pitts. Christa, who is the daughter of Carol Aebersold and sister of Chanda Bell who are the co-authors of Elf on the Shelf.  It seems the original story went through quite a bit of rejections before they got a yes, and as an entrepreneur I really enjoyed hearing about how the tradition evolved into a book and how the book and elf are now a part of the holiday tradition in so many homes.

I love this flipagram video that Lisa posted of the event (if you don't blink you will catch ME in the video too!):

Throughout the years I have seen some funny Elf photos on the internet and I couldn't resist sharing a few here!

Here are five super funny Elf on the Shelf Photos from across the interwebs:

Maybe the peppermint poops are cuter, LOL! (Via Flckr)

But wait there's MORE:

Elf on the Shelf A Birthday Tradition
Elf on the Shelf A Birthday Tradition

Elf on the Shelf now has a Birthday Tradition! There is a book which outlines the little-known story of how Santa's helpers celebrate birthdays at the North Pole and each kit includes instructions for inviting your scout elf for a birthday visit as well as a festive birthday outfit. There is also a Birthday Countdown and Game and the Birthday Chair Decoration Kit too!

My Take:

When I was younger we used Advent Calendars to countdown to Christmas. It seems like the Elf is taking over, and with all the hilarious hijinx the elf can get into I can see where kids really have fun with it. The possibilities are pretty much endless! I may have to bring mine out for some holiday wine tasting!

Where is your Elf on the Shelf right now butterfly?

Celebrating Asian Lunar New Year? Check out the @BestBuy #GiftCards with the Koi Fish! #bbylunarnewyear

#ad: Ascending Butterfly is a member of Best Buy's WOLF Blogger Program and is also a Brand Ambassador and Blogger Advisory Board Member and this is a Sponsored Post. Compensation in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or product/services at no or reduced cost has been exchanged, as always, all opinions are my own!

Best Buy is back this year with a themed Gift Card in honor of the Lunar New Year, and I love that Best Buy supports events they believe are of importance to their employees, customers and communities, and the upcoming Lunar New Year is one of those important celebrations.

While I know most of you still haven't taken down your Halloween decorations yet and are probably not ready to welcome November, the year 2014 is swiftly coming to a close butterflies. We turn the clocks back an hour this weekend for the end of Daylight Savings (Sunday, November 2nd) and as old man winter gets ready to settle in I for one can't help thinking of the new year ahead.

I learned of the Chinese Red Envelopes tradition, (known as Hong Bao) from an Asian shop while on vacation and absolutely fell in love with the idea and the tradition. The red color of the envelope symbolizes good luck and is said to ward off evil spirits, the amount of money in these envelopes will end in an even digit, according to Chinese belief odd-numbered money gifts are traditionally associated with funerals. There is also a tradition that money should not be given in fours nor should the number four appear in the amount as the pronunciation of the word 'four' resembles that of the word for 'death' which would be thought to bring bad luck. I find it interesting that in Japan the envelope is actually customarily white and NOT red.

WHERE TO GET IT:

1. Go to E-Gift Cards

2. Scroll to the right until you see the Gift Card with the Two Koi Fish.
3. Prefer a physical Gift Card? Press on the image below:

Press on the image above to purchase a $50 Best Buy Lunar New Year Gift Card

My Take:

My zodiac sign is 'Aries', and in Western Astrology, red is the color associated with my sign so I tend to gravitate to all things red.

A very dear penpal started me on the tradition of sending New Year's Cards and wishes, as she is Jewish and doesn't celebrate Christmas she asked many years ago if we could exchange New Year's wishes instead of Christmas Cards, and I loved the idea and expanded it to additional friends and family and many clients who have always appreciated the gesture. This year the upcoming Lunar New Year falls on February 19, 2015 of our Gregorian Calendar and I can't think of any better way to honor friends who observe the 'lucky money' custom than with this E-Gift Card! I may even make this image my screensaver during the month of February for a bit of extra luck!

2015 is the year of the sheep and as an Aries in Western Astrology I am totally digging this Year of the Sheep Graphic (I hope this means I am in for a 'lucky' year in 2015!):

What is YOUR New Year Tradition Butterfly? Do you celebrate Lunar New Year? If so, tag us on a picture of your 'lucky money' envelope this year, we would LOVE to see it!

Best Buy Lunar New Year 2014 E-Gift Card Wolf Blogger Campaign
Best Buy Lunar New Year E-Gift Card

I'm pretty sure it's no surprise to regular readers that I have a fascination with Asian Art and Culture. It traces back to a beautiful Asian Jewelry Box that belonged to my Grandma, I admired it so as a little girl and it started a lifelong fascination with a culture that seemed like a world away at the time. In fact one of my handbag review and giveaways that is still the most popular is one that boasts an Asian design (check out that review HERE if you missed, just bear in mind the giveaway component to that post is long since closed!)

I also like to collect cards with Asian themes, many Casinos put them out in advance of Lunar New Year and I always make it a point to get one, so when I found out that Best Buy was putting out a Lunar New Year E-Gift card I was pretty excited! (And when I'm pretty excited about something, I tend to want to want to share the news with my butterflies!)

I love that Best Buy supports events they believe are of importance to their employees, customers and communities, and the upcoming Lunar New Year is one of those important celebrations.

A former Vietnamese co-worker would share about her traditions and she would always bring in 'bánh phục linh' - a popular cookie during the Vietnamese New Year. And I learned of the Chinese Red Envelopes, (known as Hong Bao) from a favorite shop and absolutely fell in love with the idea and the tradition. One year when I worked in the Banking Industry one of the Banking Analysts who had come back from a trip to China brought the team back these envelopes and I still have mine!

I find it interesting that in Japan the envelope is actually customarily white and NOT red.

WHERE TO GET IT:

1. Go to E-Gift Cards

1. Scroll to the right until you see the Gift Card with the Two Koi Fish

GIVE IT TO WIN IT:

There is also a great chance to win Daily Gift Card Prizes up to $10,000 in the Give it to Win It promotion, but hurry it ends SOON!

My Take:

As my zodiac sign is 'Aries' in Western Astrology, red is the color associated with my sign so I tend to gravitate to all things red automatically anyway.

#ad: I get rewarded just for making someone smile, do YOU? #HallmarkCardRewards

#ad: This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with Hallmark and Latina Bloggers Connect.

Hallmark Card Rewards

I get rewarded just for making those I know and love smile! Just for letting them know I was thinking of them! Something I do even when it's not a particularly special occasion. I love to celebrate everyday moments and victories with friends and families, not just the major milestones! I learned the hard way last year that everyday moments are 'the special moments'! And I love the look on a friend or family member's face when I surprise them with a 'real card'. The smile on my niece or my nephew butterfly faces when I send them a card in the mail just because they got an A on a 'hard test' or won an award for team sports is priceless!

I actually get rewarded TWICE (but please don't tell them that!). The first is for the happiness that my card gives them, and the second is via Hallmark Rewards! Yes that's right, you get rewarded for buying cards! NICE, verdad? (verdad? = right?) :-) So if I go in and buy cards for co-workers, friends and family and I purchase at or about 50 individual cards (this is for individual cards, not boxed sets) I get one reward for every 5 cards I buy; so if I nab 50 cards, I'll end up with 10 rewards that I can use for either Lands End, Applebee's, Omaha Steaks and Cherry Moon Farms! Pretty sweet deal!

Get the lowdown on Hallmark Card Rewards:

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Get rewarded everywhere you buy Hallmark Cards at more than 30,000 grocery stores, drug stores, and supermarkets across the U.S. for selecting individual cards and NOT for boxed greetings!

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Earn 1 reward for every 5 Hallmark Cards Purchased. Rewards include gift cards, discounts, dollars off, and more from rewards partners including: Starbucks, Nike, Applebee's, Land's End, Omaha Steaks and many others!

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Download the Hallmark Card Rewards mobile app (for Android and iPhone) to easily scan the bar-code on the back of your purchased Hallmark Cards and register your rewards for your account.

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Register today for Hallmark Card Rewards at http://bit.ly/1hK3ijP

Hallmark has been a Holiday Tradition for my family as my mom would buy a new holiday ornament at various Hallmark locations during her travels in and out of the city, it's a ritual we still do to this day! We like to get collectible ornaments especially and each year we run over to get the next ornament in several series we are collecting for our tree! Our tree decorations are NOT complete until we add this year's newest store ornament!

One of our favorite types of ornaments to collect are the carousel horses, Hallmark always gets great ones and a new one each year, I have this one, it's one of my favorites:

Another of our favorites are the Hallmark Holiday Barbie Collector's Series Ornaments, here is one I'd like to add to my growing collection:

Hallmark is a special part of my holidays year after year

BUTTERFLIES: what is your favorite gift to buy at Hallmark or do you just focus on cards? (Either Way, be sure to get rewarded for your purchases!)

If anyone saves up enough rewards, I LOVE Applebees riblets by the way! So if you save up enough you treat to dinner OK? Wink! WInk! :-)

I'm Celebrating Easter with Hershey's, and you can too!

While church has always been an Easter Tradition in our family, my fondest 'after church' memories include dying Easter Eggs, then hunting for said colorful Eggs, and of course my Easter Basket (or as I remember it, multiple baskets! Grandparents RULE!)

Right: Little Ascending Butterfly!

Above: Me and my best friend dying Easter Eggs! Let's not discuss what year this was! (Special thanks to Mama Butterfly who gets the photo credit for taking this picture! And for letting me borrow it for this story!)

I don't know about you butterflies, but some things never change! I still love decorating the eggs, and I still love Easter Baskets! This year I'm not celebrating Easter alone, I'm celebrating it with Hershey's!

Hershey's let me customize my own Easter Basket virtually (how cool is that?) and then shortly after it arrived special delivery filled with the treats I had selected! And the basket is only half the fun, if you visit their super cool website you can Celebrate with Hershey's too!

Check out my cool Easter Basket:

Custom Easter Basket from Hershey's!

I took another shot just in case:

Hershey's Custom Easter Basket loaded with sweet treats!

There is something about an Easter Basket that just takes me instantly back to my childhood, all the great memories, me and my friends swapping out treats from each other's baskets, dying and decorating our own eggs, and sometimes being silly and putting two balloons on my head and pretending to be an Easter Bunny!

Hershey's Easter Basket De-Constructed!
My Basket Included:

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Reese's Mini Reester Bunnies, each bunny is individually wrapped!

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Reese's Peanut Butter Egg

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - York Dark Chocolate Peppermint Patties, each piece specially wrapped in Easter Packaging

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ - Hershey's Milk Chocolate Kisses each wrapped in it's own pastel color

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ -and a Hershey's Snappy! An all Chocolate Easter Bunny that you can share by 'snapping' off a piece!

And I restrained myself from tearing all the treats open to take a few artistic shots:

It was almost too pretty to tear open!

I could not wait to finish snapping photos to tear into those delicious treats!

But the fun doesn't stop with the basket, on the Celebrate With Hershey's Website they have products, Basket Ideas & Crafts, Recipes, Fun Stuff (like a Happy Easter Screensaver for your Mac or PC), Videos, and a Hershey's Virtual Bunny Trail of Easter tips, memories, and stories from other bloggers across the blogosphere as well!

Happy Easter Butterflies! Bloggers, feel free to post with the link to your Wordless Wednesday photos too so we can hop over to your site and spread the comment love!

Wordless Wednesday: The Rockefeller Center Holidays 2012 Edition {#Photos} #NewYorkCity

All things in and around Rockefeller Center in New York City during Holidays 2012! It's one of the most famous holiday trees and I've been visiting the new tree every year since I was a kid!
