Butterflies: The change from caterpillar though to the chrysalis and emergence as a butterfly is the greatest change in the animal world. It symbolises significant change in the course of one’s life, personality or way of thinking.
Putting them together brings us on an upwards journey of change and transformation, isn't that what we all strive for?
There are three conferences annually that I have always made it a point to attend, one happened well before Covid so it wasn't affected (waiting to find out what will happen for 2021) the other was cancelled and the third happened digitally, which was PhotoPlus Expo (I am still catching up on sessions so I will recap it once I'm caught up - and can figure out a way to take that massive amount of info and make it concise).
I am attending a Digital Conference this Saturday that I felt it very important to put on your radar! (And HURRY because General Admission is only $25!)
BACKGROUND ON SMASHBOX JEFACON:
The Latinx community, fueled by an inherent entrepreneurial spirit, have been leading the charge in new business development. Hispanic-owned businesses rose at a 40% growth rate from 2012 – 2018 (more than 2x the national average), despite the fact that the Latinx community has faced a funding ceiling that hinders entrepreneurship in the U.S.
It was this spirit that inspired the Smashbox North America team, led by Kimberly Villatoro, Vice President, North America Marketing at Smashbox Cosmetics to leverage their resources to create change. Personally and professionally, Villatoro felt moved to gather resources and create a game-changing program.
Jefacon, a multifaceted collaboration platform that empowers women to recognize their inner boss. Inspired by “jefa”, the Spanish word for “boss,” Smashbox Jefacon celebrates the immense power of all women and honors the numerous interpretations of the jefa mindset.
“Smashbox embodies the hustle. As one of Los Angeles’ original indie beauty brands, we know what it takes to build something from nothing. So do our two incredible collaborators, Beauty industry moguls Julissa Prado, CEO and Founder of Rizos Curls, and Patty Delgado, Founder and designer of Hija de tu Madre, have partnered with Smashbox in a double on-and-off-line initiative to help other Latinas connect with their inner jefas and inspire them to act on their goals, dreams and business ideas.” says Villatoro. “Together we will use our voice and amplification power to inspire and empower the women who define history, beauty and evolution.”
With a clear vision, the Smashbox team set out to find partners who embody the hustle. Villatoro and fellow Latina powerhouse colleague Courtney Childress (Smashbox Executive Director, Global Product Marketing) zoned in on Delgado and Prado after discovering they had both been following their entrepreneurial journeys.
OTHER SPEAKERS INCLUDE:
Karla Martinez de Salas, Vogue Mexico Editor in Chief will discuss "how to find your most empowering and personal style"
Ana Flores, We All Grow Latina Founder will discuss "sharing ways of decoding and manifesting your vision" (Ana and We All Grow Latina have been featured on our pages before, she is incredibly inspiring!
If you are a We All Grow Member, (if you are not you can join for free) - check out this Instagram post to find out how members can access this conference free of charge here!) You should also check out her Hear Us, See Us Panel sponsored by Comcast, it's on YouTube (FREE!) here: Hear Us, See Us - YouTube)
Alexandra Garcia, Google, Program Manager, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will discuss "how to find your "jefa" story" (a workshop focused on storytelling skills).

I know so many people are feeling 'boxed in' with so much being closed off to us this year, but please don't overlook Digital Conferences. Digital Conferences keep you connected not just to your current industry, but to your passions too.
Expand your horizons, your passion projects, your dreams, the smart way - don't attempt to re-invent the wheel - it's been done. But you can listen to podcasts, watch as many digital conferences as you can and listen to speakers who are generously sharing their journey with you. Their mistakes don't have to be yours and their triumphs shared can be your inspiration.
If you are attending the conference & decide to share power quotes that resonate with you, don't forget to use the conference hashtag: #SmashboxJefaCon
READERS SOUND OFF: Do you want to be your own boss? Do you have a Jefa/boss mindset? What was your favorite Digital Conference this year? Which ones do you want to attend next year?

There is so much lore surrounding 11:11
It is said that if you look at a clock at exactly 11:11 and have not checked the time before 11:00, then you can make a wish (am or pm). Once you make your wish, you are supposed to look away from the clock immediately, because your wish will not come true if you see the time change to 11:12. (Who knew wishes were so complex?)
It is also said that seeing this number is a sign that you are in the flow and things are aligning for you perfectly.
Others believe 11:11 is a bit of a portal day where the alignment between our realm and the next align. Many believe if you pay attention that you will receive signs from those you love who has passed on to let you know they are watching and are with you. Anything from seeing a penny on the ground, spotting a butterfly, hearing a song that reminds of you that person etc.
I for one see a different number all the time: 222 - I see it night and day on the clock, sometimes it is the number of a bus or a train car, I even see it as the number of comments on a social media post. It has a different meaning, which I have already discussed.
But in general repeating numbers are often seen as messages: whether you feel they are from the Universe, or your angels that is totally up to you.
Making a wish today certainly would be a great way to speak your desires and wants into existence. A great first step into making them come true.
Today is also Veteran's Day, be sure to thank our Military Members (both active and retired for their service today!)

This is just a reminder for my fellow New York City/State Butterflies, that today, Tuesday, June 23, 2020 is our primary elections.
If you haven't already placed your votes by absentee ballot, then be sure to hit the polls today and cast your vote!
For all those who are Tik Tok inclined, the only challenges I want to see today are the Rock the Vote challenges, make up a 'going to the polls dance', put on your mask and gloves and get out there!
If you could endanger your lives and everyone else's to hit the beach or eat at a restaurant, then you can do it to vote today!
Faceted Mirrored Vanda Flower Fountain - New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show 2020
Are you feeling a bit stir crazy?
Would an in-depth guided virtual tour of The Orchid Show: Jeff Leatham's Kaleidoscope put a little 'spring' in your spring?
I got the chance to attend the Media Preview Day of New York Botanical Gardens 2020 Orchid Show: Jeff Leatham's Kaleidoscope. I normally host a giveaway for our readers to have a chance to experience the exhibit via Orchid Evenings. But with the self quarantine and social distancing that is being enforced right now sadly NYBG is temporarily closed, but they are hosting an amazing virtual Happy Hour which I very much plan to attend and hope you can too!
It will be held on Thursday, April 9th between 5PM -6PM RSVP RIGHT NOW!!!
Pour your own cocktail and get ready to not only enjoy Orchids, but to get off your couch and turn your favorite room in your house into a dance floor. Dancer/Choreographer Princess Lockerooo, accessorize with simple DIY floral decorations and Bronx Night Market will share Happy Hour Recipes and Marc Hachadourian, NYBG's Senior Curator of Orchids will share about the mysterious night lives of many orchid species.
Even though I had the chance to attend the Media Preview Day, I will also attend the virtual happy hour tomorrow and I hope my butterflies will too.
Here is a quick sneak peek (Photos and Videos):
Above: Jeff Leatham, Floral Designer, has worked with celebrities such as Oprah, Cher, and the Kardashians. His work is currently featured in the New York Botanical Garden's "The Orchid Show: Jeff Leatham's Kaleidoscope. Welcome Remarks from Jeff during the Media Preview Day.
I nabbed video of his closing remarks:
Above: So much love, work and man hours goes into The Orchid Show at New York Botanical Garden each year, Jeff hit the nail on the head when he said how truly amazing it is that this space is so utterly transformed from year to year into something new and entirely unforgettable. I am lucky enough to live near The New York Botanical Garden and have been visiting since I was a child. The creativity of the team and the visiting artists always amazes and inspires me.
Above: Jeff was posing for a different Photographer in this shot. You guys know how much I love nabbing shots that are not what I feel 'totally posed and perfect', I try to capture a moment a feeling, and I also love that it looks like the Orchids are pointing straight to his heart as he put so much love into this exhibit!
Above: This Vanda Orchid is super rare! You can press on this or any photo to see it in full size, sometimes my blog template tends to compress certain photos.
Above: This Moth Orchid Photo was actually taken at a totally different angle. I took some time to play with this one in Corel Paintshop Pro X9 as I loved the light and airy springtime color combo! (Currently shooting with Nikon!)
Above: Remember the Video I posted of The Three Graces Fountain inside The Enid A Haupt Conservatory at New York Botanical Garden on Instagram? (Refresh your memory: https://www.instagram.com/p/BuJumgmA8sK/) THIS is that same area made over for the new exhibit! Press this one to make it bigger! (and if you are not already, please follow Ascending Butterfly via Instagram, our handle is @Ascending1)
Above: You may remember a similar photo to this one (and the one above) contained in a brief video I posted on Instagram shortly after the media preview day here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B8gWH0nAQrs/
Isn't this passageway between exhibits awesome? It is an entire mood with its modern industrial vibe!
I made a brief walking through the Kaleidoscopic Tunnel of Lights video below (pardon the ambient noise of people talking, I couldn't edit it out, so I sped it up a bit and added some background music):
Above: LED Lights transform this tunnel into a moving immersive experience!
MY TAKE:
As usual I took WAY more pictures than I could ever have time to Edit. I will definitely feature more soon.
I am saddened by the enforced quarantine keeping everyone from being able to immerse themselves in this amazing exhibit and experience Jeff Leatham's vision and creativity, but very happy about the Virtual Happy Hour!
I am hoping this Virtual Happy Hour will bring so many orchid and nature lovers together at the same time to celebrate the gifts that mother nature shares with us!
I love that NYBG is bringing the Orchid Evening Experience to everyone.
So this year I won't be able to host my annual giveaway of passes to the show, but now more readers who live in other states can get a chance to experience this for themselves.
Readers: If you are planning to RSVP please remember to use the link above to the RSVP Page, but I would love it if you took a moment to post here that you are attending! Remember Butterflies: Please stay safe and stay home! And a special Thank You to all frontline, healthcare, law enforcement, firemen, truckers, delivery men and women who are essential personnel and are out there on the frontline every day!

It is never too late to celebrate the women in your life:
Your Mother
Your Daughter
Your Aunt
Your Grandmother
Your Wife
Your Niece
I link you to International Women's Day website above, but I couldn't help but borrow this amazing quote from their website:
"An equal world is an enabled world. How will you help forge a gender equal world? Celebrate women's achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality."
They have a page devoted to increasing the visibility of women creatives and to promote their work for commercial projects in a number of fields and industries. You can find it here: https://www.internationalwomensday.com/Mission/Creative
And the page celebrating street artists worldwide is also a great read, I would love to see more women street artists earn a good commercial living from their passion!
I am a writer and photographer, and it is a struggle to make a living doing what I love, any chance I get to support female led companies/brands is important to me.
The 2020 Presidential Race saw the most female candidates in history, it literally breaks my heart that there are none left in the race.
Just like we are getting better at encouraging our girls to enter tech and sciences, I hope we begin to make strides in encouraging young women to enter politics. I hope female politicians put strong internship programs in place to allow those women who strive toward a career in politics to have a training ground.
I found out quite randomly via twitter that clothing company M.M.LaFleur (Twitter: @mmlafleur) will actually loan clothes to women seeking to run for political office! Now that my butterflies is putting your money where your mouth is about supporting women. I haven't researched this particular topic extensively but hope to learn of other brands following suit. (No pun intended!) Fellow NYC peeps should RSVP for their Complimentary In-Person Styling at their event on 03/11 to celebrate International Women's Day - your hour long appointment comes with complimentary hemline alterations in stores only and a prosecco to toast your wardrobe refresh!
Another Twitter account to put on your radar if The Oval Office is in your future is @CAWP_RU - Center for American Women and Politics.
I love all the hashtags but my favorite has to be #everydayIWD and I plan to follow it more closely to stay inspired, motivated and empowered.
And while I normally steer clear of politics on these pages, I do want to strongly encourage you all to use the power of your vote, it is more important than ever that each and every single voter makes it to the polls.

This Weekend I Plan To: Attend The New York Times Travel Show in New York City!
This weekend your favorite Ascending Butterfly is covering The New York Times Travel Show at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City!
Travel tends to combine ALL my loves: Music (during my journey), Photography (have DSLR will travel) and Foodie Adventures.
I love checking out The New York Times Travel Show and finding out about new trends and exploring fun destinations all under one roof!
Dubai will be one of the main sponsors of this years show, and they are definitely on my bucket list. I will be spending most of my day in the media panels and seminars on Friday and can't wait to explore the exhibitor floor when it opens. Dubai is on my travel bucket list and I can't wait to learn about this destination.
I also look forward to seeing the folks behind Puerto Rico Tourism to get a better sense on how the Island is doing after suffering such massive earthquakes!
Please keep both Australia and Puerto Rico in your prayers my butterflies, both are suffering from such devastating natural disaster!
If you haven't already done so, get your tickets today!
Are you attending The New York Times Travel Show this year? If so, hit me up on twitter at @Tracy_Iglesias or @Ascending1 so we can meet up! What is the top destination on your travel wish list this year?

I bring you a Special Christmas Edition #WordlessWednesday
After a 12 year hiatus, Holiday Lights returns to Bronx Zoo in New York City! Running from November 29 - December 31st as well as January 3-5 (they are not open today though! But you should head over there tomorrow if you haven't seen it already!) I can't even describe how happy I am that the Holiday of Lights is back, I have visited the Festival every year since it's inception and was so sad when it went away in 2007. I would visit every year with my mom. Our tradition is back, I hope these photos put the "Ho, Ho, Ho!" in your holidays and the holly in your jolly!
Stay tuned for a special video at the end!
Above: One of my favorite stops is the Ice Carving Station. It always amazes me how much painstaking detail goes into making these unique ice sculptures.
Above: I enjoy watching ice carvers, they take this huge block of ice and turn it into something beautiful knowing full well it won't last long. I have always wanted to try my hand at it. I would probably carve wine glasses and grapes! And of course, BUTTERFLIES
Above: Nothing gets you in the holiday spirits more than Christmas Carols - thankfully the Zoo thought of EVERYTHING!
Above: This underwater fantasy was one of my favorite displays. Long time readers know I live for being at the Beach/Ocean. It's where I feel the most peace. And getting a chance to interact with dolphins is one of my favorite things to do when I travel, second only to horseback riding. Press this one to make it bigger, it's worth it. The RAW file to this is my current screen saver!
Above: I had to get a better angle for the Dolphin. I wanted the coral so I got a bit of the rope divider in the shot. I wish people could be cool so the dividers weren't necessary, this would have looked so much more real without the ropes.
Above: Little known fact about me, I LOVE all things Giraffe. I have always been fascinated by them. The real Giraffes at the Zoo are always one of my must see stops!
Above: Don't forget you press the photos to make them larger. I took the shot of a group of these, but for some reason I opted to post the solo Antelope. There was just something more expressive about this photo to me.
Above: I hope he isn't planning to eat those Parrots as a late night snack! LOL
Above: It was so much fun seeing how all the kids faces lit up at each display, aren't these Gorillas cool?
Above: Herd of Elephants! See the cute baby in the center?
Above: Pride of Lions (I call this 'new school' holiday of lights Lions, look at the photo below to see why)
Above: This is the 'Old School' pride of 'light lions' - these are the ones I remember when I used to go before, I had fun finding some of my old favorites still on display!
Above: Are those Lemurs I spot in the Bamboo?
Above: These Parrots are trying to get away from that Tiger on the lower left!
Above: These penguins are ready for the festivities!
Above: I spot Rhinocerus!
Above: Hey Rhinos! You might want to run in the opposite direction of this hungry looking Tiger!
Above: These make me want to start singing Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer!
Above: This horse makes me super happy!
Above: And of course I had to end the photos with the illuminated Butterflies. (These were there when I used to visit in the past and I was so happy to see they kept them) I mean my blog is called Ascending Butterfly, there was no way I would have missed this shot.
Below: Press Play (you might want to watch "Full Screen" for maximum effect and enjoy the Christmas Tree Light Show with a nice mug of hot chocolate or coffee. Volume on, the light show syncs up to holiday music, ENJOY!
MY TAKE:
I couldn't quite edit out all the exuberant children around me, but I think hearing real families taking it in is part of the charm. (Note: None of the kids you hear are mine. I do not. Repeat. I do not have children). I am just a big kid at heart, I still love going to the Zoo.
I couldn't be happier to have one of my favorite holiday traditions return to The Bronx Zoo. The holiday lights will fill your heart with cheer and joy and you should definitely make it a point to see it.
I also normally attend the Train Show at New York Botanical Garden (The Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Garden are very close by, but in my opinion I would do two separate days to make a day of each one and be sure you don't miss anything.) Since I wasn't able to attend this year's show, I will link you to coverage of a previous Train Show.
The New York Botanical Garden Train Show: https://www.ascendingbutterfly.com/2016/01/last-chance-for-nybg-holiday-train-show.html (this is 2015's Train Show as it has the most pictures and my most recent coverage included a giveaway which is of course closed, I figured using an older one that did not have a giveaway attached would cause the least confusion.)
Readers: Do you take in a Light Show during the Holidays? It doesn't always have to be a special trip, even a walk around the neighborhood to see the Christmas lights count! Did Santa treat you nice today?
FTC Disclosure: This is NOT a compensated Post, tickets to the show were provided to Ascending Butterfly's Editorial Team for Editorial Consideration. ALL opinions are 100% my own! I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission 16 CFR, Part 255 - Guides Concerning the use of endorsements and testimonials in advertising, you may check our Giveaway and Disclosure Page for additional information regarding Ascending Butterfly Disclosure. My love for my favorite Bronx Based NYC landmarks is true and strong and genuine! #ProudBronxite
The New York Times Travel Show 2020 is nearly upon us!
I love covering The New York Time Travel Show, it literally puts the world at my fingertips, and I always look forward to what each new year of the show has to offer.
If you haven't already done so, get your tickets!
In 2019, The New York Times Travel Show Media Day was filled with seminars/panels, eats on and off the exhibitor floor, and many discussions about the Government Shut Down and how it is affecting travel.
Scary stats about how enrollment and applications are down to U.S. universities from international students.
The keynote delved into how the US is currently perceived abroad. And it is not very positive right now.
And while I do try hard to keep politics and religion off my pages and make this a place where you can escape from the daily news and connect with fellow light seekers, it makes me sad that the one thing that connects everyone - travel - is becoming so much more difficult to do.
At the Travel Show I always find my tribe. Journalists, Travelers, Creatives, Photographers, Influencers, Foodies, and Wanderers.
Travel shows us that we have so much more in common, more commonalities than differences. We need to build bridges, not walls.
More love and more inclusion.
The show has always been somewhat of an escape for me, but ultimately it was important and smart that panelists addressed the elephant in the room.
It is not only difficult for travelers to get here, but for us to go abroad. We can't spread our wings when someone else has them clipped.
I have always subscribed to the "salad bowl" theory instead of the melting pot, a ton of different ingredients all coming together to make something great, while maintaining their individuality.
I travel because I am curious. I travel because I like to learn, see, explore, wander, eat new foods, explore new architecture, meet people, change my perspective. I have never once returned from any journey the same person I was when I left.
I got to travel the world in a weekend at The New York Times Travel Show and that is why it is one of my favorite trade shows to cover!
Here are some photo highlights:
I was still in a panel session when they did the ribbon cutting.
Above: Adventure Flying with the Icon A5 by Icon Aircraft! The NY Boat Show was co-branded with The New York Times Travel Show!
I wish I was on one of these right now! Hello SeaDoo! Think I could convince Santa to leave one of these under my tree for Christmas this year?
Above: Curacao Tourism Board greets visitors with a smile!
Above: Let's just say my smartwatch clocked me in at way over 10,000 steps per day walking around the convention center! I am wearing Miracle Body Jeans, Emu Boots and my Michael Kors Access Smartwatch!
One of the best things about trade shows are the raffles! The Curacao Tourism Board was encouraging visitors to take a photo and post them to social media for a chance to win a trip to Curacao.
This Rum Punch from the Puerto Rico Tourism Board gave me life! The 360 degree LED display at their booth was amazing and they also hosted one of my favorite networking receptions held during the New York Times Travel Show hosted by ManAboutWorld.com
Puerto Rico experienced so much devastation after Hurricane Maria in 2017. It was the worst natural disaster on record to affect the Islands of Puerto Rico and Domenica.
I remember seeing the 13th ward in Louisiana well after they were hit, things are just as slow going in Puerto Rico as they were for Louisiana - and in both cases, they need those tourism dollars to help speed up re-development efforts.
Not only is Puerto Rico Tourism Ready for travelers, but this quote from the Tourism Board of Puerto Rico sums it up perfectly:
"Puerto Rico is still as enchanting as ever…your visit is a gift to yourself and to the people on the island. Thank you!! "
Above: As you can see from the photos above I spent a great deal of time in the Caribbean Pavilion!
Above: Isn't that red head dress amazing?
Above: Doesn't this one remind you a bit of Cher?
Above: I need this for Carnival
Above: Photo from Costa Rica Tourism Board Booth at New York Times Travel Show, Jacob Javitz Convention Center, New York City 2019
MY TAKE:
The New York Times Travel Show always provides me with travel inspiration, industry trends and access to a myriad of Tourism Boards and Resorts and I am excited to learn that this year one of the main sponsors is Dubai - a travel experience that is definitely on my travel bucket list. I will be taking all the notes!
This year wasn't such a great year for me personally and health wise and I didn't get to travel nearly as much as I wanted to. So for me, days away from a brand new decade, travel is certainly at the forefront of my mind, front and center of my vision board, and one of the things I want most for myself in this coming new year/DECADE. (I still can't believe we are not just entering another year, but ushering in an entirely new decade!)
Readers/Butterflies Sound Off: Have you done any traveling in 2019? Where have you visited so far? If you haven't traveled yet this year, what was your favorite trip of all time?
